The global phenomenon that is the 4am Project returns for its second consecutive year next week, as bleary eyed photographers take to their local landscape to capture the moment during the dead of night.
That’s it. Just reboot it. Hold the Sleep/Wake Button at the top right-hand corner of the iPhone for a few seconds and run the slider across the screen when it asks. When your iPhone shuts down, wait a few seconds and press the Sleep/Wake button to power it back up again. This will fix so many problems preemptively.
FlashPhix 2.2 by Phoenxsoftware is on sale now for only $0.99 USD. The app is 50% off until the new update is released. FlashPhix provides you with a set of features which enable you to control a picture’s exposure, colors and contrast to the detail.
This is the full version, not the lite version, and it recently sold for $1.99. The app is from the makers of the excellent MonoPhix app, which produces some of the best color-to-monochrome conversion available on the iPhone.
While I haven’t reviewed FlashPhix 2 here yet, I do use the app. FlashPhix often produces very good results for me when I use it to fix the exposure of an image. It’s easy to use, but also offers enough additional controls to make purchasing the full version worthwhile especially now that it’s on sale. This also gets you into the update path.
I’m unsure how long before the update will be released and FlashPhix returns to its normal price. If you’ve been considering buying this app, hurry to the App Store now.

BeFunky FX
Version 1.0
Bottom line: Great looking effects, but low resolution output and other problems spoil the app.
BeFunky FX is a new app from BeFunky that applies really nice edgy effects to your images. BeFunky has several other iPhone apps which apply a variety of effects to your images. They’re also the creators of the Befunky.com website which features an arsenal of effects you can apply to your images using a Flash-based browser interface on your desktop or laptop.
Film Lab is a new app from CLBITZ Ubiquitous Communications, the makers of Retro Camera. It’s coming to the App Store soon, barring any unforeseen delays. iPhoneographers who used to shoot with film or who want to recreate the look of analog film stocks will love Film Lab.
Update 3.29.10 12:46 PM CDT: That’s it! Between Facebook, Twitter and here, we have given out all of our promo codes for ClassicSAMP. If you missed out, stay tuned for more giveaways. =M=
ClassicSAMP has just been updated to version 3.0. Want a free copy? We’ve got some promo codes to give away.
The new update just hit the App Store and has 2 new vintage film styles and now supports resolutions up to 2225×1500 pixels. It’s another sibling of a misskiwi app that we like a lot, ClassicTOY. Both are camera apps with very nice analog and vintage filters.
ClassicSAMP mimics shooting with the classic Supersampler camera — a 4 lens toy camera which uses standard 35mm film. ClassicSAMP is similar to the popular Andigraf camera app, but with many more film options. With this update, you’ll need iPhone OS 3.1.3 or newer to run the app.
Life In LoFi has some free promo codes to give away. I’ll send one promo code to each of the first 24 readers who request one. Hit me up on Twitter/@MartyNearDFW, send me an email, or simply ask for one in the comments section here. One code per reader, please.
These codes work in the U.S. App Store only. Be sure to include an email address somewhere in your post for me to send the code to.
If you don’t get one of the free codes, ClassicSAMP is only $0.99 USD. (App Store link)
Again, big thanks to misskiwi for providing Life In LoFi with these free ClassicSAMP promo codes.
One of my regular reads is the Smoking Strobes blog written by photographer Michael Zelbel. The other day, he posted this to his Twitter and Facebook pages. It’s a great quote and I thought I’d share it here.
“Dear photographer, the moment you take a really great photo almost never seems like it holds this great photo, at the first glance.”
Update: Right at midnight this app went back to its normal price of $0.99. It has some flaws, but it can also create some very interesting effects. I highly recommend a tripod when using this app.
Slow Shutter Cam, an app that simulates some control over exposure and shutter speed is FREE in the App Store for today only! It normally sells for $0.99 USD.
While I haven’t reviewed it here yet, I’ve gotten some interesting results from the app, including some cool motion blurs shot in camera. It’s not a full resolution app. Maximum image size is 1024×768 — usable in many situations.
It’s FREE for today, Saturday, March 27 only! This is a chance to try the app for free. Grab it while you can.
