The Darkroom of Yesterday, Today

Synthetic Infatuation, the makers of the extremely popular Hipstamatic app, have announced that their next iPhone app, SwankoLab, is set to be released in early April barring any unexpected delays in testing or the approval process.

We don’t have much information on the new app yet. There’s a new SwankoLab website with a few details and sample images.

Update 03.25.10 11:09 PM CDT: Busy day here for free stuff…. That’s it! All the ClassicPAN promo codes have been given out. Stay tuned for other promo code giveaways.   =M=

Want a free copy of ClassicPAN?

ClassicPAN is getting a new update soon. You can read our review of the the current version here. It’s older sibling of another misskiwi app that we like a lot, ClassicTOY. Both are camera apps with very nice analog and vintage filters.

To get you ready for the update, Life In LoFi has some free promo codes to give away. I’ll send one promo code to each of the first 12 readers who request one. Hit me up on Twitter/@MartyNearDFW, send me an email, or simply ask for one in the comments section here. One code per reader, please.

These codes work in the U.S. App Store only. They’ll only be valid until the update is released, so redeem them quickly.

Be sure to include an email address somewhere in your post for me to send the code to.

If you don’t get one of the free codes, ClassicPan is only $0.99 USD . (App Store link)

Many thanks to misskiwi for providing Life In LoFi with these free ClassicPAN promo codes!

I recently reviewed version 1.2 of the app and quite honestly, I didn’t like the results of two of the three filters. However, I received an email from Asasa Software. It seems that they take user (and reviewer) criticism very seriously. To me, that’s a sign of a good app developer.

Version 2.0 has just been submitted to the App Store and features graphics and user interface improvements. Thanks to the reviews, Asasa is working on version 2.1 which will improve the flash effects. I’ll keep you posted on the updates and the new improvements to the filters.

Cool Link: Eight tips for taking street photography

iPhoneography: Street scene from a bus window

Street scene from a bus window

Spring is finally here and hopefully the weather is becoming decent in your area. As the days grow warmer and longer, more people get outside to take advantage of nice spring weather and the opportunities increase to take some great street photography.

I prefer using my iPhone to take street photography. While the image quality from a DSLR is definitely better, the larger size and form factor of the camera can influence the shot. When people see a camera and realize that they’re being photographed, they often behave differently and you lose your moment. In that instant, the camera effects the scene.

Darkroom Pro FREE for a Limited Time

Darkroom Pro for iPhoneThe 3.2 update of Darkroom Pro by Stepcase was released this week and is currently free in the App Store for a limited time! This is not the reduced-feature standard version — this is the full-blown Pro version, which has been selling recently for $0.99 USD.

Darkroom Pro is a camera replacement app with full-screen Big Button shutter, anti-shake camera stabilization, rule of thirds viewfinder gridlines and other features.

It doesn’t support iPhone 3GS auto-focus, so it may be better suited for older iPhones. We haven’t used it, but recent versions have been getting decent user reviews in the App Store.

Sometimes, these freebies go pretty fast, so grab Darkroom Pro while you can!

News: Apple Stores Selling iPhones Without Proof of AT&T Contract

According to a recent post on 9 to5 Mac, Apple Stores are no longer requiring proof of an AT&T contract in order to purchase an iPhone. The post was supported by Gizmodo, who obtained a copy of an internal memo published on March 22, 2010 outlining the change in policy.

Just speculation, but I can’t help wondering if this is to help clear out back inventory to make room for this year’s rumored new model iPhone….

Two of the features that I like about Knox Bronson’s Pixels At An Exhibition are the monthly Featured Artists (of which I was selected) and the Artist-In-Residence. Both are an extended focus on an iPhoneographer and give you a more in-depth look into some of the best or more personal works of the artist and their work.

This month’s PixelEx Artist-In-Residence is Jaime Ferreyros. I’ve admired Jaime’s work for some time, his photography, his poetry and his iPhoneography. He has an amazing eye for color, contrast, composition and finding the moment.

As he said in a recent interview (link available after the jump), iphontography “allows you to show the beauty that is in everything and everywhere.”

His images are a testament to that philosophy and approach to image-making. His use of color and his sense of composition, as well as his use of apps, are impeccable. As iphontography has recently emerged from its infancy as an art form, Jaime stands out as one of the pioneers of this new medium.

Well-deserved congratulations to Jaime for being selected as this month’s Pixels At An Exhibition’s Artist-In-Residence.

Review: Sloppy Borders for iPhone

Sloppy Borders
version 1.0

Rating 2 stars

Bottom line: Good edges, but a little sloppy in the implementation. Needs improvement. UPDATE: Doesn’t play well with the iPhone 4 and the new iOS. Review downgraded to 2 stars.

Sloppy Borders app for iPhoneSloppy Borders is a new app from Jayms Ramirez Photography which adds old-school, film-style edges to your photographs. The effect is based on filed out negative carriers — sometimes called “sloppy” — which add a black line around a full frame image.

Sloppy Borders is easy to use, creates good-looking edges and nice effects, but does not save at high-resolutions in the version 1.0 release I tested.

Review: imphoto (Standard) for iPhone

imphoto (Standard version)
Version 2.0

Rating 2 stars

Bottom line: Requires a pricey upgrade to save at full-res or remove copyright mark.

imphoto for iPhone is an exposure enhancement app from imsense. Although the Standard version normally sells for $1.99 USD, from reading the App Store reviews, it’s often on sale (or free) and I picked it up for $0.99. The standard version has too many annoyances and disabled features to be really useful. It feels like a try-before-you-buy demo app and should be priced for free or at least allow the option of removing the annoying copyright mark.
