Retro Camera Plus' new Hipsteroku filter

It looks like one of the other “Retro Camera” apps is getting an update this week. Retro Camera Plus from Urbian, the iOS version ported from Retro Camera for Android, got an update today not long after the update for Android hit the streets.

Retro Camera Plus is a square frame, toy camera app that was inspired by “the Lomo, Holga, Polaroid, Diana, the toy cameras and Hipstamatic.”

The new 1.0.6 update is live in the App Store now. Like the Android versions, it features a new camera, Hipsteroku. It’s a filter with a slight red color shift and medium color saturation, no film damage and a white analog frame. See the sample above.

The app saved images at 2056×2056 pixels in the previous version on an iPhone 4, but it looks like the high resolution option is not working and picture sizes have dropped back to 1200×1200 and 512×512 in this update. 1.4 megapixels isn’t bad — it’s just not 4 megapixels. Grrr.

Also, after updating, the update not only crashed repeatedly for me, it also crashed my entire iPhone. Rebooting after installing seems to have fixed this problem.

I’m not sure why the resolution has been reduced in this version. If the high resolution was essential to you, you may want to sit this update out and hold on to the previous version. Otherwise, 1200×1200 is great for small-medium sized prints and online sharing.

This app is free and ad-supported like its sibling Retro Camera for Android. There is no ad-free version for iPhone at this time.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G. Requires iOS 4.0.2 or later.
