To celebrate the launch of the version 2 update, NightCap is currently free today only in the App Store. This is an excellent app that I haven’t reviewed yet, but it gives you greater control over your iPhone’s shutter speed in most everyday low light situations than just about any other photo app.

We just announced yesterday that Slow Shutter Cam was free for day and on the surface, the two apps sound very similar. In fact, they do two different things and accomplish different results. Click past the jump to find out more and for the App Store link. >>>

NightCap is one of the only apps to do true long exposure photography, and the new focus / exposure tools are unique and extremely effective (quite like MatteBox, but more flexible). Most people are using it for low light work, but some people find it very effective in the day as well.

NightCap does a single long exposure limited up to 1 second at full resolution. This gives you better results in low-light situations. In my test images, images had more detail and less low-light noise than comparison shots with Apple’s Camera app. Slow Shutter Cam works differently — it combines multiple video exposures — and is more effective for very long exposure effects, such as motion blurs and light painting.

According to Chris Wood, NightCap’s developer, “Nightcap does long (up to 1s, beyond that is currently impossible) exposure in low light at full resolution, and has excellent (or so my testers tell me) focus/exposure locking tools for photography in any light. It’s the best app for night photography because it’s the only app that does long exposure. In daylight it’s a regular camera with nice controls.”

I agree with his conclusion. In my tests, NightCap gives me shutter control of the iPhone camera that is more like a traditional camera for low-light situations. As with any long exposure app, using NightCap with a tripod of some sort to keep the iPhone still while the shutter is open will greatly improve the clarity of your images.

NightCap is normally $0.99 and for its shutter speed controls, I’d recommend it at its regular price. It’s FREE for a very limited time right now in the App Store. Grab it now.
