International Call For Entries: “The Art of Photography” in San Diego, California

Here’s a call for entries for an upcoming show, “The Art of Photography” at the San Diego Art Institute. San Diego is a huge market with a thriving arts community. The show runs from September 29 through November 11, 2012. The deadline for submissions is this Monday, July 16th. iPhoneographers are welcome to submit.

Before posting this, I asked the producer of the show, Steven Churchill, how iPhoneography would be received. He responded,

“We are encouraging each photographer to submit images which are a unique expression of you, your vision, your creativity. No limits, no boxes you need to fit into. We love iPhone photography. So, the answer to your question is a definite “Yes.” iPhone photography will be accepted based on the quality of the piece.”

The Art of Photography Show is an established and critical force in the world of contemporary photography. Now in its 8th year, this well thought out international exhibition provides value to artists at every turn, from first-rate viewing in the judging process to publication opportunities, well-attended exhibitions and lectures, photo industry connections and substantial monetary awards.

We welcome submissions by any living photographer, young or old. The photographs do not have to be from a newly created body of work. We are looking for work that is important to the artist from any time in their career. Perhaps your most important work was created recently. Perhaps it was created decades ago. We want to show the work that you feel most strongly about.

Julian Cox is the esteemed judge for the Art of Photography Show 2012. Mr. Cox is the Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Most photographers feel that having their work exhibited in a museum is the ultimate goal. Yet, getting exposure to museum curators is normally very difficult. Our project provides that opportunity.

    Honestly I think that the art world should start thinking globally and according to the laws of the digital world.

    Sending framed photos from Europe is prohibitive if you're not a pro (>100 us$ per photo) , I would be more than happy to pay for local printing and framing services, but they are not made available from most of these shows.

    Mobile photography is setting us free in our creativity, but as always the world is slow in catching up.

    Thanks for your post. I'm happy to mention that we are definitely thinking globally here at the Art of Photography Show. For our international friends we have made it easy to arrange printing and framing here in San Diego, California. The printer we use is superb. Our framer is an expert as well. We don't want anyone to be prohibited from sending us their work due to the cost of overseas shipping, so we've established these options. Last year we exhibited work from 26 countries, and most of it was printed and framed here.

    And I'd like to make note of something which you might not have noticed. We've added something new this year, which is explained in the Prospectus:

    EXHIBITION: 200 images will be chosen by our judge, Julian Cox. Approximately 100 pieces will be selected by him to hang in the physical gallery exhibition, running September 29 through November 11, 2012. All 200 images will be permanently displayed on our website. We will notify all 200 "chosen" artists whether their work will be displayed in the actual physical gallery. We feel that being in the top 200 makes each of the accepted pieces at the same exceptional level of achievement, but the judge will curate which images fit best together in the physical gallery space.

    So, you can receive the honor of having your work selected by Julian Cox and get many of the same promotional benefits, yet not exhibit it in our gallery if you prefer. No problem.

    Dear Frankensinatra,

    As you might imagine, the Art of Photography Show is a huge project and quite expensive, so the financial risk we have undertaken is significant. But in all of these things there are substantial benefits for the artists, so we have chosen to "go for it" full throttle. The entire project (every detail) is being pursued with total excellence. Yes, we ask the artists to participate in a minor expense as it pertains to their own work being entered. It's a small risk in exchange for a very large upside potential. Other photography competitions, such as Communication Arts, Spider Awards, PDN, etc., also charge for entries — more than us, by the way.

    And I'd like to mention, this is not a "virtual" exhibition, it is presented in a large elegant gallery space — the San Diego Art Institute. Obviously there is significant expense for us to have our show there, but we believe that exhibiting actual objects of art in a physical gallery is the very best way to present the work, and certainly the most viable way to SELL the work.     This prestigious international exhibition is the real deal. A key point of the show is to provide a forum for independent photographers to exhibit and sell their work. The Opening Reception Gala on September 29th will be attended by over 1,500 people (for free). That evening we will announce the award winning images and give away $10,000 in cash prizes, including $2,000 for first prize. And we'll be giving away thousands of copies of the Show Catalog, which will feature the images and information about each of the exhibited artists.     This project is truly a "by artists for artists" endeavor. We're doing our best to make it very beneficial for as many people as possible. The judge for this year's show is Julian Cox, who is the Curator of Photography at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.     The purpose for all of the above activities, events and efforts is to promote our artists and to sell their work. It works, we get results.
