There are a ton of multi-panel, diptych-style photo apps in the App Store. Most of them do the same thing — add photos to multiple panels within an image. Very few do it well or uniquely. It’s easy for a new one to get lost in the noise.

Layout is a new iPad-only, multi-panel frame app from Juicy Bits, the creators of the excellent Halftone/a> app (that you should check out as well). Layout is a very noteworthy addition the multi-panel style of app and does some pretty cool things that no other app in its class does.

Among the features that makes Layout unique are the cool swipe to add frames tool, a powerful adaptive radial menu, and drag and drop adjustable panel edges. Importing images from Facebook also automatically captions the image as well using the Facebook captions. The app uses the powerful image editing module from Aviary. There are 100 border patterns built into the app and they look consistently better than most other apps in this class.

Layout saves at 2048×2048 pixels – comparable to many other apps in this class. Higher resolution support is planned for a future update.

Also planned for the next update is Universal support, meaning this very cool multi-panel app is coming soon to iPhone soon as well. It should be submitted to Apple for review in a week or two. Here are is a sneak peek of the iPhone version:

The iPad version looks pretty nifty and the app should be a game-changer when it hits iPhone soon.

Right now, Layout is iPad-only and sells for $1.99. Requirements: Compatible with iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation), and iPad Wi-Fi + 4G.Requires iOS 5.0 or later.
