KaleidaCam for iPhone, ipad

A while back I reviewed KaleidaCam. The app turns your iPhone into an electronic kaleidoscope. Just like a real kaleidoscope, it splits what you see into reflected wedges.

It turned out that KaleidaCam was more fun than I initially thought. “Using it feels less like a camera and more like a toy, and that’s the fun of the app.”

KaleidaCam has just gotten a very, very nice update. The app is still really fun. And now it has even more toys to play with. Read more, including your chance to win one, after the jump. >>>

KaleidaCam for iPhone and iPad

KaleidaCam is a simple, straightforward camera app. Everyday objects and settings take on sometimes cool abstract qualities when shot through KaleidaCam, and it’s pretty easy to get some bizarre, unexpected abstracts using this app.

The new 2.0 update has a lot of new tools and features. Here’s the list from the App Store description:

  • Dramatically faster image processing and photo capture speed. Huge performance improvements throughout the app!
  • More kaleidoscope options! Brand new hexagonal mosiac, square mosaic and single mirror kaleidoscope styles. Even more spiral and circle kaleidoscope styles available via in-app purchase.
  • Now you can use KaleidaCam on existing images from your photo library.
  • Easier to use, better looking and more intuitive interface.
  • Updated for the new iPhone 5 screen and iOS 6.

More tools are now readily available while shooting and the new flyaway toolbar helps keep the screen uncluttered. The image import feature is easily accessible from the tool bar. You can also make some easy and stunning onscreen adjustments to the sides of the image simply by “twisting” the image onscreen. There’s also a new lightbox, which helps keep your camera roll uncluttered.

It saves in your device’s full resolution. It evens saves geotag and EXIF data. Doesn’t get much easier than that. It’s a camera only and doesn’t allow to import images from your camera roll.

It’s still pretty amazing how the app sees ordinary objects. KaleidaCam stays on my iPhone after I write about it. It’s a fun diversion. KaleidaCam is a simple app with an electronic twist on a classic childhood toy. It’s got more goodies now and it makes its magic very well.

KaleidaCam is $1.99 in the App Store. It’s on sale now for $0.99 — that’s half off.
