An external battery pack is the iPhoneography equivalent of bringing plenty of spare film. I’m still waiting for Mophie’s iPhone 5 offerings. We’ve had great results with the Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 4S and 4.
If you’re looking for a battery case now, Brando has an appealing alternative. I have not checked this out yet, but their 2200 mAh iPhone 5 External Power Pack looks to be a reasonably-priced, well powered battery back for iPhone 5.
Like a Mophie, it looks to be a fairly low profile case. It looks to add some thickness and weight to the iPhone 5. This was noticeable on a heavier and thicker iPhone 4 series. That extra juice comes at a size premium. The case also has a protective cover and an iPhone stand.
Based on its specs, it should just about double the usable time of your iPhone between charges. If you’re out in the field shooting, or talking, or both, that’s valuable time and battery charge. Again, I haven’t seen this product myself, so no word on how well it actually performs on a device or how many recharge cycles the battery will last before dying.
It’s only $35, which will most likely be less than the Mophie price point. Full specs and ordering information can be found on the Brando website.
