I’m big on tutorial books to learn and become proficient quickly. They are a quick, concentrated way to learn skills and techniques to take my work up a level or two. For example, even though I’ve been using Adobe Photoshop since version 2.0 (I still have those install floppies as mementos), I just recently bought an excellent Photoshop tutorial book to learn more compositing techniques.

AppAlchemy is the latest interactive appBook on Experimental Photography Processes with iPhone Apps from Dan Marcolina, the Author of the critically acclaimed iPhone Obsessed Series. Where Misho Baranovic’s recent eBook was more on theory and shooting technique — valuable information and experience, AppAlchemy is focused on apps, processes and quickly learning many advanced production and processing techniques to give you the tools to really ramp up your apping skills.

AppAlchemy {coming to iTunes September} from dan marcolina on Vimeo.

Dan’s new interactive book, AppAlchemy is pure magic — a brilliant new iPhoneography classroom-in-an-app that is fun as well as a highly valuable learning tool, blurring the distinction between ebooks and media-rich interactive app.

Dan guides you through his list of 40 essential apps in 8 categories including:

Production Apps, like Photoforge2 and Snapseed

Grunge Apps, like Vintage Scene and Modern Grunge

Light and Blur Apps, like Tiltshift and BigLens

Toon and Graphic Apps, like Decim8 and ToonPaint

Film Looks Apps, like PlasticBullet and Dramatic Black & White

Camera Apps, like SlowShutter and CCD

HDR Apps, like Simply HDR and TrueHDR

Auto FXs Apps, like RetroCamera and Jazz

Dan’s great self-designed app lets the reader discover great app and processing tutorials, and with a touch or twist lets you explore the technique further, view videos and galleries and more. Users can interact and contribute to the work by adding their own comments at the end of each section.

Dan takes you through the capabilities of dozens of popular apps as well as a few hidden gems. App Alchemy guides the reader through each step, enabling them to learn as they recreate the amazing samples Dan has provided. Rich details, such as online galleries showcasing other artists work with the same app broaden the appeal of “AppAlchemy” as not only a tutorial but as inspiration as well.

iPhoneographer/Graphic Designer Dan Marcolina created one of the best book/companion app combinations previously with his aptly named “iPhone Obsessed”. His new interactive app, App Alchemy combines the best aspects of a traditional book and feature-rich interactive media. The app thoroughly covers new apps, updated apps, updated techniques and much, much more.

An internet connection is recommended for getting the best experience from the book. In order to keep file size down, AppAlchemy accesses the hours of video from the cloud. Also, the interactivity and user contributions really enhance the value of this eBook.

The design of the app’s menu/table of contents make it easy for you to locate what you’re looking for. The app’s interactive text/video tutorials are easy to follow. Either taken as a whole or taken in bits, AppAlchemy will have beginners apping like pros in no time and give more experienced iPhonegraphers a lot of new tips, tools and techniques to have in their virtual camera bag.

AppAlchemy is normally $8.99 in the App Store. It’s on sale today, September 21, 2012 for $4.99 for its launch. AppAlchemy is iPad-only. Requirements: Compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Photographer and iPhoneographer Misho Baranovic has been creating and sharing iPhone photography since the art’s early days. He’s a charter member of the Mobile Photography Group with other notable iPhoneographers.

Misho has just published a digital book, “iPhone Photography: How to Shoot, Edit and Share Great Photos”, in which he shares a lot of information on how to shoot great photos, edit them, and share them. It’s a great, single-volume course on the complete iPhoneography workflow. More important, he graciously shares priceless information and experience that iPhoneographers of all skill levels will find very valuable.

Taking good photographs involves luck, skill, a good eye, and a knowledge of your tools and various rules of photography and aesthetics. Photographers work for years learning and honing these skills. This book helps iPhoneographers, especially novices and those with limited experience, fast-track that knowledge.

Misho is a professional photographer who has also embraced iPhoneography. In his book, he doesn’t just give you step-by-step instructions on how to take iPhone pictures and app them (although that’s in there), he teaches the reader on how to take better pictures using the iPhone as a camera and processing tool.

The book is divided into three sections: Shoot, Edit, and Share. Each section is further broken down and guides you step-by-step through each part of the process using real-world examples. iPhoneographers just starting to expand beyond the one-click simplicity of Instagram will appreciate Misho’s instructive attention to detail. The book is well designed and more advanced iPhoneographers can easily skip past the basics, although I highly recommend that you read it cover to cover regardless of your skill level. There are a lot of valuable photographic and iPhoneographic tidbits spread throughout the book.

Surprisingly, my favorite section of the book was Section One: Shoot. Misho discusses many aspects of capturing images with the iPhone’s camera. It’s packed with tutorials and tips on how to grip the iPhone for better shooting, Apple Camera basics, a very interesting guide through iOS 5′s Photos app and a lot more.

Shoot takes the reader beyond the basic Camera. Misho shares the pros and cons of several of the most widely used camera replacement apps. It’s a great infographic and a good reference. There is an excellent tutorial on ProCamera.

The section has tutorials on lighting, exposure and composition from the perspective of the iPhone camera’s limitations. There’s even a chapter devoted to gear you’ll need when traveling.

Like other sections of the book, Misho interviews other high-profile pioneers of iPhoneography, including Aik-Beng Chia, Jordi V. Pou, Robert-Paul Jansen and others. Not only do these interviews give the text a different voice, but they contribute additional experience and perspectives. These interviews make “iPhone Photography:….” a unique and more valuable resource in that regard.

Section Two is probably the weakest of the three sections. It’s still a good tutorial and overview of several photo apps many long-time iPhoneographers have gravitated towards. It includes tutorials on photo apps Cross Process, Camera+, Phoster and brief overviews of a few others. There’s a good tutorial on getting the most out of the popular Hipstamatic and a fantastic tutorial on the powerful photo app Snapseed and its tools and capabilities. This section is like a “missing manual” for Snapseed.

Section Three not only takes the reader through basic sharing, but teaches philosophies and recommendations to help better improve your reach through social media and other sharing channels. Misho goes over in detail most of the popular photo sharing apps — sharing pathways, key apps, group formation, exhibition and printing. This section touches upon showing your works in print in galleries and even includes an abridged version of Life In LoFi’s Photo Print Size chart. There’s a lot in this section. It’s packed with essential sharing and displaying tips for beginners and even more experienced iPhonegraphers will learn a few things from this section.

The book is intelligently written yet easy to read. It never talks down to the reader. My only disappointment in the book is that Section Two: Edit is pretty light on apps. Some of the app choices made me scratch my head a little. There are hundreds of great photo apps available and I feel the book would have been even better had it covered a few more of the major ones, such as Filterstorm, PhotoForge2, 645PRO, or some of the specialized photo effects apps. However, these omissions are more than made up for the photographic perspectives, real-world shooting experience and photographic philosophies that the book shares. That information is invaluable and often much harder to come by.

Overall, I really like “iPhone Photography: How to Shoot, Edit and Share Great Photos”. It’s a quick, thorough iPhoneography tutorial by Misho Baranovic with sidebars from several of the most prominent iPhoneographers shooting today. For $15 and the investment in time to read it, beginners can quickly learn many techniques it might have taken them much longer to acquire through trial and error. I strongly recommend this book to beginners in particular for learning good shooting techniques and photographic theory. Right away, the tips in the first section of this book will help you take better photographs. The tips on sharing will help all iPhoneographers broaden their reach and audience. For more advanced iPhonegraphers, the Snapseed tutorial and the perspectives and shares of Misho and other iPhoneographers make this a worthwhile consideration.

“iPhone Photography: How to Shoot, Edit and Share Great Photos” by Misho Baranovic is $14.99 and is available as a digital download only in PDF and EPUB formats.

Dan Marcolina’s excellent book, iPhone Obsessed – Photo Editing Experiments with Apps, is quite simply an excellent, step-by-step guide to apping your photos on your iPhone. The iPad companion app to the book, iObsessed Companion, has been described as “stunning”.

The iPad-only app was recently updated and is on sale now in the App Store for only $2.99.

The book, iPhone Obsessed – Photo Editing Experiments with Apps, is an instant education in production or “apping” on the iPhone. It guides you step-by-step through the production process.

Each chapter introduces apps you’ll need along with brief highlights of each app. You’re then introduced to each photograph and given easy to follow tutorials on how to recreate the same effects on your iPhone.

The book is interactive on any iDevice with a camera and an internet connection. Microsoft tags are scattered throughout the book. When read by the free Tag Reader from Microsoft app, you are taken to the book’s mobile-friendly interactive websites for tutorial videos, free downloads, and more information and direct links to apps.

Rather than take you through what each app does, the book covers a wide range of styles and then shows you the tools and techniques to recreate them. The book covers grunge, toon, paint, HDR and many other styles, as well as showing you tips on how to create great-looking vignettes, blurs and lighting styles. I like how the emphasis is on the workflow and that many of the advanced techniques take you through steps using several apps.

Another thing I really like about the book are Dan’s thoughts on many of the photos. Not only do you get into his head on the story behind the shot, but as you read his thoughts about the production of the photo, he shares his insights on why he made certain moves on an image, why he used particular apps, and what he wanted to achieve with his final result.

The book was published a few months ago – an eternity in app years. Many of the apps have been updated since the book’s release. How does it hold up? Extremely well. The book is written as a tutorial. Concepts are given more emphasis than screen-by-screen instruction, helping the book stay relevant and making the book a useful reference over time, giving you the tools to use similar apps and tools to make the same types of moves. The book is like having a mentor where you learn the secrets of apping, not the lost manual for 47+ apps.

iPhone Obsessed is an instant education in learning advanced techniques to really app up your images. Learning by experimentation is fun. iPhone Obsessed immerses you in the techniques. iPhone Obsessed has great tips and techniques that will help nearly any iPhoneographer.

The iPad App

The app, iObsessed Companion Edition One, expands on the book and shows many new image concoctions including detailed formulas for some of the unexplained images in the book. The app features step-by-step video tutorials right in-line with the featured images. It’s not designed to replace the book, but to enhance it.

Together, both the book and the app make for a comprehensive education in production and image edition on the iPhone. Together, they are a shortcut to learning better, more creative production on the iPhone. Highly recommended.

The book lists for $29.99 but is currently available new from Barnes & Noble for only $19.49. The app is currently on sale for $2.99 – a savings of $2.00.

A shout out for iPhoneographers with books….

It’s been over a year since Chase Jarvis published the most high-profile book of iPhone photography, The Best Camera is the One That’s With You (September 18, 2009, to be exact). This little gem was shot 2 megapixels at a time on an iPhone 2G and apped solely on Chase’s iPhone. My guess is the app of choice was Best Camera. The novelty of having a high-profile photographer embrace iPhone photography added a lot of credibility from out side the community and brought in a lot of curious eyeballs to this then-emerging photographic art form.

Actually, though, before and since Best Camera…, iPhoneographers have been publishing their own books through services like Blurb and MagCloud. There are many excellent collections out there. All of these books together make an excellent library, full of examples and commentary of the movers and shakers of iPhoneography’s emergence.

Here is a rundown of books from some of iPhoneography’s higher profile iPhoneographers. It’s by no means complete and there are many excellent books that are not represented here.

Click on the titles for links to preview or purchase the books.

The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You: iPhone Photography
by Chase Jarvis

Let’s start with the grandfather of iPhoneography books. Not just a book, but an application, Best Camera, and one of the first online photo sharing communities devoted exclusively to iPhone photography. Over 200 pages of images shot with an iPhone that’s lofi and primitive by today’s standards. I still occasionally use the app, although through sporadic updates it’s gotten a little long in the tooth. This little gem of a book, though, still inspires me and still sits on my coffee table.

Pixels: the Art of the iPhone: KahBANG issue
Fifty-six stunning images from the global culture of pioneers in this emergent and rapidly evolving underground art form, iPhoneography…. iPhone only, no computers! This selection of fifty-two images comprises the gallery show at the KahBANG art festival in Bangor Maine, August 6-14, 2010, presented by KahBang and PixelsAtAnExhibition.com. Also available in a special, perfect bound edition.

The book is an interactive reference work for anyone interested in photography, creativity and design. It features the award-winning work, interviews and portraits of some of the most talented mobile photographers from all over the world. There’s also a lot of special content for anyone who is into playing with QR codes.
Books by Dixon Hamby

Seattle’s Dixon Hamby is one of the iPhoneographers who’s been self-publishing his photo books through Blurb.com for quite a while. This year, he’s published two — a collection of his best of iPhone photographs and a book of his ongoing iPhone Street Art series of work. I’m a fan of his street art series in particular and I have his Johnny Cash street photo here in my office. The photographs are subtly apped — usually just contrast and color jacked up — but the composition is often interesting. In his series, Dixon juxtaposes posted flyers with life behind it. The results are often an interesting, thought provoking and sometimes amusing contrast in subjects.

The Mill Pond – a book of iPhoneography
I love to walk at the pond alone or with my two boys Eli & Noah. I always bring my iphone to capture pictures – this book is the result of those visits. I hope you enjoy looking at these images as much as I enjoy making them.”

Those of you who know Dan, either in person or online, know of his fondness for the gorgeous wooded areas around his home, and especially one of his favorite subjects to photograph — “The Tree”. The Mill Pond is a collection of Dan’s stunning landscapes.

TWO WORLDS, TWO TREES, ONE VISION
This book is a long distance collaboration which compliments and counterpoints each others’ works.

Each photographer has a favorite tree which is a constant in their landscapes. Both trees and both photographers play off each other excellently in this all-too-short book.

EYE PHONE DREAMS
iPhone images by Jose Chavarry

One of the more intriguing iPhoneographers to emerge from 2010, Jose Chavarry’s book is filled with the colorful dreamlike and often ethereal photos Jose has come to be known for. Many of my favorite images of his are featured in this book, including the haunting “Before She Wakes.” The book is pretty light — only 20 pages, and can be viewed in its entirety online.

In it, he told me about his background as a photographer and proceeded to give me advice and critique about my photography. And so began a friendship. I still have the email and share the advice he gave whenever I have the opportunity, in particular this quote from photographer Ansel Adams, “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.”

I’ve known of Jordi’s Kokovoko Project since the beginning of the blog. The kokovoko mobile photography project is his ongoing iPhoneography project. Here is the book of the first part of the ongoing project. This book includes a selection of the more of 500 images done for the project by the end of 2010.

“I found the Polarize app, which basically mimics an instant Polaroid, which sounds terrible but works very well, and I found that it gave such a lovely mood and style to my photographs, I couldn’t stop taking pictures with it after that and I was taking so many pictures I would never have captured with an SLR or even a compact camera, and especially not an actual instant Polaroid camera. ”

His book is a collection of some of his images taken throughout the whole of 2009 and is intended as a visual blog of things that caught his eye throughout the year.

By Matt Brock

Another Matt from London. Matt Brock’s book features photographs of London, other parts of Britain, and various random odd things, taken on an iPhone. The book is a collection of Matt’s iPhoneography, processed using a variety of apps. Images range from cityscapes in and around London, landscapes, and captured candids. Matt’s London is an interesting sometimes stark, other times personal visual journey.

“Strange how things work out, how it takes a certain mix for things to work, for the connection to be made. One thing and then you are changed in some way, and you see the world around you in a different way.”

–

If you’re interested in self-publishing your own works, check out Blurb.com. It seems to be the self-publishing choice for many an iPhoneographer. Creating enough photographs for even a small book is a worthy goal. Even if you only sell a few copies of your book to family and friends, seeing your work in print is an amazingly satisfying experience.

Killer Photos with Your iPhone
by Matthew Bamberg, Kris Krug, and Greg Ketchum
Published by Course Technology
Price: $24.99

Bottom Line: An excellent introduction to both photography and iPhoneography. Its straightforward style and emphasis on photography make this a great guide for beginning and intermediate photographers.

Killer Photos with Your iPhone by photographers Matthew Bamberg, Kris Krug, and Greg Ketchum is the first book for iPhone photographers. There are already books published that feature iPhoneography — most notably The Best Camera is the One That’s With You by Chase Jarvis. Killer Photos is about creating photography using the iPhone, with its unique combination of digital lo-fi camera and thousands of available photo apps. Written from the perspective of a photographer, this is an excellent book for beginning and intermediate iPhoneographers but even more seasoned iPhoneographers will learn a thing or two about the iPhone and the capabilities of its camera.

From the publisher’s description:

“Killer Photos with Your iPhone shows students how to take fantastic pictures using the camera built right into their iPhone. Because of its portability and unique capabilities, the iPhone camera is now one of the most popular digital cameras on the market, and this book shows you how to do everything from taking simple pictures to using apps to snap and create innovative images. You’ll find information on the basics of shooting with an iPhone, including how to aim, compose, and focus your shots, as well as shooting within an app platform, and even post-processing. Many of the most popular photography apps are covered, and explained option-by-option with full-color images that allow students to see the progression of the app all at once instead of step-by-step. Covering both the 3G and 3GS iPhone models, this book will have students shooting, editing, and sharing killer photos in no time!”

The book is well written and excellently organized. The first chapters cover the basics of the iPhone’s camera and purchasing apps. The first chapter is a really nice overview of the capabilities and limitations of the iPhone’s camera. The emphasis is on the basics, but I was pleasantly surprised to find tidbit’s like detailed specs of the iPhone’s camera. I believe it’s important for a photographer to know their camera in order to get the best results possible from it.

The book shifts into photography basics, illustrating composition guidelines and lighting basics. It gradually moves into more advanced topics, emphasizing good photographic technique.

With the basics out of the way, Killer Photos covers additional lighting and composition techniques and starts to sprinkle in tips on post-processing apps. I especially like that the book details and illustrates how the iPhone performs (or sometimes doesn’t perform) in many of the lighting conditions an iPhoneographer will encounter. Chapters are devoted to photographing portraits, places and things and using better lighting techniques. There’s even a section on how to create killer light trails.

Finally, it’s an app bonanza where Killer Photos breaks down and explores the features of several of the more popular photo editing and post-processing apps. The last few chapters explore in-depth several of the more popular post-processing apps — Photoshop.com Mobile, CameraBag, PhotoForge, FX Photo Studio and Tiffen Photo fx among others. The apps are explored in depth, digging through the menus and illustrating what each feature does. These are like printed instruction manuals. For someone with no previous experience with these apps, these chapters are really helpful in exploring in detail all of the features of these apps and how powerful some of them are. The book explores the menus that many of us don’t take the time to.

One of the things that I really like about the book is the emphasis on photographic basics, theory and technique instead of just apping up photos. It’s nearly Chapter 4 before the first third-party app is even mentioned. Although there are chapters that are devoted to apps, the main focus of the book is how to shoot a good photo to begin with.

The book is an easy read but is never condescending. It’s written clearly with little technobabble, so it’s not intimidating to the new photographer. At the same time, it covers classic photographic rules and techniques that gives the aspiring iPhoneographer a good framework in which to explore and grow. In order to break the rules, one must know them first. Killer Photos is filled with examples, photos and a lot of extra tips as well.

Killer Photos is an excellent book for someone wanting to explore iPhoneography and grow as a photographer — someone who wants to use their phone for more than just snapshots to post to their Facebook profile. This book covers everything they need to know to put them well on their way to taking some killer photos with their iPhone. Intermediate iPhone photographers — those who know their way around the camera and have a few photo apps — can skip past the first 39 pages or so and will still find this book interesting as well for the quick lessons in photographic technique and the detailed guides for the apps.

If you’re a professional or an iPhoneographer who’s already submitting work to gallery shows and online exhibitions, or if you are expecting a book on how-to for creating elaborate and intricate “killer photos” using multiple apps, this book is not for you.

Killer Photos was written before the iPhone 4 was released and although it’s written with the iPhone 3G and 3GS in mind, most of the concepts are so non-device-specific that what is taught here can easily be applied to the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 as well.

Killer Photos with Your iPhone is an excellent introduction to both photography and iPhoneography. Its straightforward style and emphasis on photography make this a great guide for beginning and intermediate photographers with a desire to learn how photography works. I recommend it to anyone who is new to iPhone photography or iPhoneographers with moderate experience who want to quickly learn more about their camera, sharpen their skills and learn tools and techniques to take their iPhone photography up a notch.

Killer Photos with Your iPhone lists for $24.99 USD, but is available now on Amazon.com for only $18.24.

A full LoFi review is forthcoming, but one of the things that I really like about the book is that it emphasizes photographic theory and technique instead of just apping up photos. While there are chapters devoted to apps, the main focus of the book is shooting a good photo to begin with.

The book is written with the iPhone 3G and 3GS in mind, but the photographic theory presented is applicable to all iPhones. The book lists for $24.99 USD, but is available now on Amazon.com for only $16.49.
