“Purple Haze” reduction in Perfectly Clear

Why I Recommend Perfectly Clear

Perfectly Clear has been in My Camera Bag post since I bought it years ago and will still be there when the post gets updated soon. Even with the great camera in the iPhone 5, I still use Perfectly Clear often to clean up photos and get them ready for any other processing I may do.

Not to cannibalize Athentech’s sales, but this is the same image processing engine behind their Photoshop plugin, which costs a heluva lot more than a buck or three.

Even an iPhone 5 or 4S will occasionally take pictures that need help. With one click, it corrects color balance, punches up the vibrance, sharpens images, and helps enhance and balance shadow areas. The built-in Noise Reduction is among the best I’ve found on the iOS platform. Perfectly Clear also reduces — often dramatically — or fixes “Purple Haze,” the purple tint effect found sometimes with the iPhone 5 camera.

With newer iPhones, you may not always see noticeable results, but many times the results are better overall balance and more visually pleasing color. Perfectly Clear is a quick and easy fix to add punch to flat images and get photos looking like you expect them to.

It’s now got a maximum image size for iPhone5 and iPad3 of 24.5 MP — that’s about a 4948×4948 px image.

I still recommend Perfectly Clear to owners of new iPhones. For older iPhones, it’s a highly recommended, even essential, purchase.

The app brings another component of sorts from Creative Suite to iOS. Adobe Ideas is like a “Lite” version of Adobe Illustrator. With more users opting for iPads instead of laptops to untether themselves, these ports make sense.

Ideas has many of the tools you are likely to use in a vector-based app. The standard drawing tools — pens, brushes, etc. — are included. There’s an eyedropper tool for easy color picking. There are more advanced features, such as Kuler color palette integration and layers. The app has an in-app purchase which lets you save, work, and transfer over Adobe’s Cloud-based services.

Now all we need is an InDesign-lite app for iOS and I can leave my MacBook home….

The ProCamera 4.1 update has just been released with two new features to give photographers even more creative possibilities when shooting with the iPhone.

New Exposure Boost!

The first feature is a two-step Exposure Boost that allows you to take high-quality shots at night.  To turn on the Exposure Boost first go into the Control Panel (bottom-right button) and press on the Histogram button (top row, second from the left).  This activates the Histogram, Shutter Speed and ISO displays.

There are two ways to use the Exposure Boost:

1. Tapping on the Shutter Speed display activates Hand-Held Mode which gives you exposure times of up to 1/7^th of a second.  This is perfect for boosting exposure while still being able to get sharp photos when holding the iPhone.  It’s recommended that the anti-shake function is activated when using this mode to add further stability when shooting.
2. A long press on the Shutter Speed display activates the Tripod Mode which gives you exposure times up to 1 second.  Perfect for night-time cityscapes and light trails.  Using this mode can also help reduce ISO levels and associated noise in night photographs.  As the name suggests, this mode works best with a tripod if you want to capture clear photos.  Otherwise, you can use the mode for interesting slow-shutter and blur effects.

Here is a table that shows how the two modes appear on the iPhone 4 and 5.

Full-screen editing control with new ProLab sliders

With the new ProLab sliders you can swipe anywhere on screen to fine-tune your image adjustments.  When selected, a left/right swipe controls the intensity of the sliders.  When de-selected a left/right swipe toggles between the adjusted and original photograph.

Here is an example of the new Contrast slider.

You can read my original review for Deco Sketch Pro here. It’s a great, modern-style app that creates effects that no other photo app does. Choose from a selection of eight overall styles, including lines, circles, hexagons and other patterns. It adds everything from a delicate web of geometric shapes to bold, colorful, modern patterns to an image. The results are amazing works of iPhone art that you can get using no other photo app.

There’s a steeper learning curve than many other effects app, but the results are often worth the effort.

It’s been a while since we wrote about KitCam. Since our first glowing review, this great all-in-one camera app has gotten several updates and its already great toolset has grown.

KitCam just got another update today. It now features the same low-light mode found on many other high-end camera apps. The base model is also on sale now for only $0.99 for a limited time. Keep reading for more info on this update and an App Store link.

The new Night Snap for KitCam mode is similar to the long exposure modes found in 645PRO, PureShot, NightCap and other camera apps equipped with long exposure. This opens up some great low-light photography to older devices. Basically, what it does is keeps the app in low-ISO mode and lets you force the shutter to stay open longer. A longer exposure means you need to keep your iPhone completely steady, but combined with the low-ISO speeds, it yields much clearer and brighter low light images with less noise, even on devices with Apple’s High ISO mode like the iPhone 5. Check out the sample shots below for comparison.

How the scene really looked

Other new features in this update include Front-facing Flash to help improve monkey-paw selfies, 10 New geometric shape frames, Uncompressed TIFF support, and extended time lapse parameters. You can now adjust the compression of JPG saves for swapping file size with image quality. And the histogram now shows the current exposure time (shutter speed) and ISO.

It’s a good update that adds a lot of power features to this already well-equipped all-in-one. These features definitely leapfrog KitCam over Camera+ as far as power and versatility.

EXIF-fi is a great iPhone utility that lets you view, edit or add EXIF data that may be incorrect or missing. The app used to be free, but now runs a mere $0.99. Even for a buck, I recommend this handy utility for fixing, changing or adding EXIF data.

EXIF-fi has a lean, easy to use interface that allows you to add or edit date, photographer and copyright information to your photos. Most photo apps don’t save this info in the image and this adds another layer of copyright protection to your photographs. This is different than adding a visible watermark to your image as this info is stored as part of your photo’s metadata. You can also add or edit app information, including app used and filters in case you want to keep that recipe a secret.

EXIF-fi can also add or change missing or incorrect location data in an image. To add or change location data, simply tap on the map and drop a pin onto the correct location. There is no need to enter clunky geo-coordinates. You can do this to either add or move a Geotag.

You can check Life In LoFi’s Photo App Resolution page for apps that save EXIF data. There’s a surprising number that don’t.

Veensta Camera – which bills itself as the “best instant camera” – is free right now. It’s both a camera and it also lets you import images from your photo library.

The app features effects, frames, and unfortunately saves at a disappointing 1272 x 1272. This is version 1.1, so you would think that higher resolution would have been on the to-do list. The version update fixed a bug for 3GS cameras and claims to fully support the 4 and 4S, so the new iPhone also missed out.

It’s square format, but lacks the classic Polaroid frames.

Veensta Camera is free for a limited time. It’s normally $0.99. Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later. This will run on any iPhone from a 3G on up.

Big Lens has been out for a while, but until now I haven’t shared a look at it here, despite the fact that I use the app regularly.

Big Lens is FREE for a limited time. The app has now returned to its regular price. =M= It’s normally $0.99 and well worth a dollar. It’s more than another fake focus or tiltshift app. It’s an excellent faux depth of field app. I’ve got a download link and my belated review of the app after the jump. >>>

More than Instagram’s tiltshift blur, Big Lens more precisely and accurately recreates the look of a more focused, even narrow depth of field. It creates this by adding a slective gradient blur to parts of the image. The end result is a more precise, more versatile, more realistic faux depth of field than Instagram’s simple tiltshift effect can create.

Big Lens has two modes, Basic and advanced. The Basic mode is similar to the popular tiltshift effect in many apps. There are two blur tools — a circle and a bar. Pinching and moving resizes and places the blur effect as it behaves in other apps.

That’s where the similarities end and where Big Lens earns its keep. Big Lens has an excellent set of camera-style tools that give you much more control over the blur. Simulating the effects of a DSLR lens, the Aperture tool lets you adjust the intensity of the blur and amount of the gradient. There is a Lens tool — more like an aperture shape tool — that also effects the look of the blur.

Advanced mode has all of these tools except the area of focus is painted and erased onto the image, giving more precise control of the effect and allowing the artist to paint in an accurate depth of field focus effect. There is also an intelligent Lasso tool to help quickly select and isolate high-contrast objects.

All of the tools work well and are very responsive. Nothing felt laggy or inaccurate to me. Even switching between a one finger paint and a two finger pinch and move gesture was solid and worked well.

Unlike many focus apps, the edges of the focus are soft and have a natural fade. By experimenting with the Aperture and Lens tools, you can really fine-tune the gradient and roll-off of the blur to create very natural-looking focus effects.

Big Lens has 18 filters, many of them recreating the looks of various LOMO cameras. The filters add contrast and color tweaks, as well as other aberrations and effects to the image. They’re well done, easy, one-click looks for your photos, but they’re not the primary use of Big Lens. Creating great focus effects is and Big Lens does an outstanding job.

I’ve used many of the good focus effects apps available, including TiltShift, FocalLab and BlurFX. Nothing comes close to the ease of use of this app along with the detail and natural looks of the effects Big Lens creates.

Big Lens supports full 8MP native resolution of the latest iPhones and it preserves EXIF including Geotags.

Big Lens is FREE for a limited time. That’s an essential download. Even for a buck, I still highly recommend it.

I’ve reviewed Polamatic here before. It’s simply one of the best instant camera apps available. Because it’s licensed by Polaroid, I’m not even sure we can call it a “fauxlaroid.” Swipe is a great new app for adding text to images. A ton of great fonts and a slick interface.

I’ve reviewed HarrisCamera and LightLeaker here on the blog and really like both apps. TitleFX is a great way to add text to an image and Instaflash is the other Dynamic Range Correction app I keep handy along with Perfectly Clear. These are some excellent apps and all four freebies combined are a savings of $5.

Wood Camera is currently on sale for 50% off. How does it stack up?

Wood Camera is a very popular vintage/retro/grunge photo app. It’s fast, easy to use, and has received glowing reviews from other, non-iPhoneography websites. While not as powerful as other iPhone photo apps, overall it balances a lot well.

It’s been in my review queue for a while. I thought the recent 2.0 update is a good opportunity to have a look here at this high-charting photo app. Is it worth the hype? >>>

As I write this, Wood Camera is the number one paid app in the App Store. Not just the Photo & Video category, but the entire App Store. Going back a couple of years, I’m unable to find another photo app that’s topped the overall charts. Camera+ by tap tap tap and Vintique by GMY Studio topped out at #2 overall. This is quite an impressive feat.

Fortunately, Wood Camera is not an emulation of a classic camera that’s made of wood, nor is it an app that adds natural, wood grain effects to your images. Wood Camera is an easy to use camera and effects app. The app adds retro and vintage effects, mostly through color overlays. In addition to a very basic tool set, you can also add textures, tiltshift blur, vignette and frames.

Wood Camera starts you off with a very helpful overview of the app’s features — a great touch for users stepping up from more basic photo apps like Instagram. Like Instagram, filters are one-touch. There’s just a lot more of them and there are a few more easy adjustment options.

Wood Camera mostly delivers. In each filter category, there are plenty of choices and the bulk of them look good and are very usable for this style of app. The selection of color filters add everything from retro toy camera looks to more surreal color combinations. Unlike many apps in this class, the combinations overall look pretty good. Like Instagram’s one-click filters, users will find their favorites in Wood Camera’s selections. I seemed to land on Paris and Devonshire a lot.

I’m not usually a fan of textured overlays, but the selection here again is well done and I found nearly all of them to be usable for appropriate images. There’s very little fluff here. The overlays are static. I wish there were a way to rotate them in the app to be able to give the appearance of more randomized finished effects.

The intensity of each effect can be individually adjusted back for a more subtle look. Or you can toggle any of them off.

Wood Camera has an easy to use basic tool set which lets you easily select from freestyle or preset crops as well as adjust brightness, contrast and hue.

Wood Camera’s Frames are the app’s weakest feature, in my opinion. Although the app lets you crop to any aspect ratio, most of the frames here are optimized for a square format photo. Many of the frames looked irritatingly distorted on standard, uncropped 4:3 images. Many of the frames also look a little soft to my eye when enlarged and viewed closely. For most purposes, this shouldn’t be a problem. I found myself using only a handful of the frames in my test images. In particular, the instant print frames looked badly distorted and the faux-Hassy frames, while not as bad, still looked unnatural to me. I found trying to use the frames on a portrait or landscape image to be frustrating and irritating and it really took me out of an otherwise pleasant experience using this app.

Wood Camera uses a Lightbox workflow. This may use up more space on your device, but as long as an image is still in the app’s lightbox, you can change any edit in the image, including crops. That’s a great feature for users who like to experiment with different looks. From the lightbox, photos can easily be saved or shared over the usual photo sharing networks.

Wood Camera has a lot of filters and features and more are added through regular updates. It’s essentially several easy one-click workflows. Users who are stepping up from more basic photo apps will appreciate that. Wood Camera is also very fast. Saving to the camera roll was almost instant. It was so quick, I double checked to make sure it was saving full resolution images. Not only does Wood Camera save full res 8MP images, but it also saves an image’s EXIF data including all Geotag info.

So, how does Wood Camera stack up? For people new to iPhone photography, I usually recommend Camera+ hands down. Not only does it have a great camera, but it’s got a great set of easy to use effects as well. I would also recommend Wood Camera for users who are looking to grow from Instagram’s limited set of one-click filters, but who still want an app that’s fast and easy to use.

For users who’ve been shooting iPhoneography for a while, for a buck or two, Wood Camera offers a good set of vintage, grimy, scratchy filters and textures that’s just different enough than other similar apps, such as 100 Cameras and Distressed FX. If you like this style of app, Wood Camera is worth looking into for a buck or two.

Wood Camera is normally $1.99 in the App Store. It’s on sale for a limited time for $0.99. Recently, Life In LoFi added a new Photo Apps Sales page to the blog. It’s where we keep track of the best photo apps on sale, hopefully giving you the heads up on an app or two you’ve had your eye on, helping you to discover an app you might have otherwise overlooked, or saving you the trouble of wasting your time and money downloading scammy or low-res “crap apps.” The page is updated regularly and we’ll keep track of all the good New year’s iPhone photo app deals there.

Here are some of today’s highlights:

Hueless is the outstanding black & white camera app with a slick user interface and powerful tools to help you take great black & white photos. It’s been one of my favorites for a while. Hueless almost never goes on sale. In fact, this is the first time it’s been discounted since its introduction. If you’ve been on the fence about Hueless, this is a great chance to grab it for half price — $0.99. This discount is good only through New Year’s Day.

Etchings is a truly unique photo app which adds the look of the classic artisan etching style to your photos. It was recently updated and I took a look at the new version here. The app has even more etchings styles and now supports more than the full resolution on an iPhone 4S and 5. it’s FREE for a limited time.

Just in time for New Year’s eve, NightCap is FREE for a limited time only. It’s a camera replacement built for high performance around the clock. It’s one of very few apps available that does real slow shutter photography, not a fake software effect some other apps use. In low light it performs better than any other app thanks to its unique extended exposure range, producing brighter and more detailed images with less grain. It’s one of few apps that I recently recommended for shooting better photos of New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Big Photo is a great utility. It allows you to view pictures of any size with unlimited zoom in/out with highest quality — right down to the pixel. It’s great for viewing images on your iPhone or iPad and making sure they’re razor sharp. More importantly, it’s one of very few apps that let you upsample an image — resize it up. I’ve had a couple of looks at this great utility, most recently in this post here. It’s on sale for only $0.99 for a limited time.

TtV Photo Studio has been around a while. It’s a very good app that applies a number of authentic-looking through the viewfinder effects to your photos. It has great looking effects with dust, grain, color shifts, gridlines, frames and imperfections. They’re very similar to the gorgeous effects of their low-res TtV Camera app, except now in high resolution. It’s FREE for a limited time.

Sorry for the stock images on this one, but it’s Friday night and I wanted to get this post up quickly. Actually, the App Store images are representative of what this app can do.

The app has only a few user ratings, but they’re mostly 5-star ratings. I may not go 5 stars, but this is a good, solid 4 star app.

It’s got a solid tool set for tweaking and finishing your images. including the standard tools as well as a blur effect, red-eye reducer, image whitener (good for teeth, I suppose), sharpen, built-in denoise and many others. You can use either the app’s built-in camera or import images from your photo library.

It’s got a very broad selection of filters, textures, and borders. Effects packs are downloaded from the cloud when needed the first time. All effects are unlocked and included in the price of the app. There are a broad range of filter styles, including a wide range of vintage and analog effect styles, “soft” and subtle effects, and a cool set of multi-grid, multi-shade “creative” effects that are worth a buck alone.

The UI can get cluttered, but everything is flyaway and is hidden yet easily accessible most of the time.

If you’ve already got a big image editor, Pixlr Express Plus offers a few image fix tools you may not already have depending on what’s already on your iPhone. There’s a broad range of filters, frames and textures — many of them very usable. The app may add to your camera bag.

Pixlr Express Plus supports the full 8MP resolution of an iPhone 5. It strips out most EXIF data including location info. Social sharing is almost non-existent and limited to the standard iOS options.

Pixlr Express Plus is an excellent choice for users wanting to step up from a more basic image editor. Grab the full version now while it’s on sale. It’s made by the same folks who gave us the underrated Pixlr-o-matic and Pixlr-o-matic PLUS which is another app you should have a look at.

iColorama S is a pretty versatile and robust photo effects app for iPhone. It’s FREE today only — a savings of $1.99. This is for the full iPhone version only, not the feature-limited “Lite” version. There’s an iPad version as well, iColorama, but it is not free today — it’s still $1.99.

This is a good app that you might like to have in your iPhone’s camera bag. Click past the jump for more info and an App Store link. >>>

iColorama S isn’t really a high profile app. I haven’t really heard much talk about it and I’ve had it for while. I took a closer look at it for this post. I was pleasantly surprised at the broad range of the filter set and how easy it is to work in the app.

The app has several categories of effects ranging from basic image adjustments to color and texture effects. There is little in this app that’s garish. I found most of the effects to be very usable. All effects are clearly labeled and easy to browse and apply. All effects can be applied and stacked. It has several effects that I like a lot, including a pretty cool Harris effect that can be applied to images.

It has several distortion effects, each with multiple options. You can layer and blend two images with not only the full complement of standard blending modes, but several uncommon ones as well.

The workspace is clean with many of the tools tucked away in flyaway menus. Many of the tools have a cool mask blur, a pretty unique feature. Imagine a tilt-shift blur that quickly masks the color effect rather than the image focus. It’s a pretty neat and powerful tool.

The selection of 31 textures is fairly subtle and very usable, unlike many of the dedicated texture apps.

iColorama S is fast, responsive for the most part (the Mask Blur felt a little sticky at times) and pretty stable. The app supports the full 8MP resolution of an iPhone 5. It strips out EXIF data including location info. Undo is a little clunky and I think it only works on the last operation performed until it’s locked into place by “Apply.” I don’t really have any other major issues with the app. It’s a very good, versatile effects app.

Overall, I’d say it’s worth its regular price of two bucks. It’s definitely a great free download. Grab it today while it’s free.

I often wax nostalgic about the old Kai’s Photo Goo plug-in for Photoshop. It visually defined the 1990′s for a summer. The eels’ “Beautiful Freak” CD cover wouldn’t have looked the same without the distorted, bugeyes created in Goo.

Elasticam is another “goo” app for iPhone which lets you distort and smear images in a fluid manner. I found it to be one of the most responsive and powerful apps of its type in the App Store.

Elasticam has several tools, including adjustable brush size and swirl to help you create some really gooey distortions like big jawlines and alien heads, all onscreen and all easy to figure out with some experimenting and play.

Elasticam renders onscreen in preview mode, which makes it fast to work in, but it saves in full iPhone 8MP resolution images. Images are rendered in nice detail.

The app’s undo is a bit clunky. I wish there were onscreen Undo and Reset features. In this first version, I only got the Undo and Reset buttons after saving the image to my camera roll… sometimes.

Elasticam is normally $1.99 in the App Store. It’s free for a few days, so grab it now. They’ve been making filters and lens accessories for over 70 years and bring their expertise to this often overlooked photo app. It’s a great app to add analog and in-lens style effects to your photos, including a bunch inspired by their glass filters. I use this app often to add analog film-style details and effects that I like to use in my iPhoneography. It’s $0.99 for a limited time.  |

A few of my thoughts on some of these apps:

UPDATE: I just added a few new apps that I like a lot. Filterstorm is one of the best, most powerful image editors on iOS. It’s on sale now for half off. I’ve found Big Photo to be indispensable, not only for enlarging smaller images, but for viewing images down the the pixel level. Highly recommended. And Meta is on sale for half off. It’s a camera app that adds unique effects to your photos. I’ve reviewed all three apps here and like them all.

UPDATE: Perfectly Clear is FREE right now in the App Store, a savings of $2.99. Even with the improved cameras in the iPhone 4S and 5, I still consider this an extremely useful app. The latest updates have a new tool to virtually eliminate the “purple haze” on the iPhone 5. It was supposed to drop down to $0.99 for the weekend. It’s free right now. Grab quickly!

Glaze is an excellent faux-natural media app. This is a great discount and there are only a few more hours left to grab this one for free. Go! Now!

FiLMiC Pro is an excellent, powerful video camera for your iPhone and adds a number of advanced features to your iPhone’s video capabilities. I don’t think there’s a better iPhone app for capturing raw video than this one. It’s FREE right now. Grab it while you can. This is a great app at it’s regular price of $3.99. It’s an essential freebie.

UPDATE: Nice to see ProCamera now on this list. Despite all the new, powerful camera replacement apps that have been released recently, ProCamera is still my camera replacement app of choice. It’s fast, powerful and its tools are easy to use. It improves on the functionality over the standard Apple Camera without sacrificing speed or ease of use.

Color Lake adds excellent water, rain and snow ripple and reflection effects to your images. On some images, the effects can be stunning.

There are many new iPhone users reading this blog. If you don’t already own Hipstamatic, I highly recommend it. It’s one of the original lo-fi photo apps for iPhone. Its lush effects are still unequaled even years after its introduction. It has seamless integration with Instagram. It’s user interface is a nostalgic throwback to old, plastic analog cameras. It’s a fun shooter.

Halftone is by far the best pulpy, halftone effect app available. With multiple halftone styles and a selection of “distressed” papers, you can give your images the look of the old poorly printed comic books from your childhood.

Polamatic has gone through several revisions and is now sets the bar for fake Polaroid or fauxlaroid apps. Polamatic has it all — high res, a big selection of great looking film effects and a ton of authentic-looking SX-70 frames. Polamatic perfectly captures the look and tone of the classic Poloaroid instant photos you remember. Highly recommended.

My own “Over-LOMOed” filter from Process.

Photo app Process is a very good, versatile, very powerful image editor and filter app. Its dial-based adjustments allow you to make more precise tweaks than apps with an adjustment slider. It features real-time, hardware-accelerated editing. It has one of the best non-destructive editing and layering of effects workflows on the iPhone. You can delete any single effect in the processing history — it’s pretty cool!

Process is on sale right now for only $0.99. It’s normally $4.99 and most recently $9.99. It’s a very good app, but I think ten bucks is expensive for most iOS photo apps. If you’ve been curious about the app, 99¢ is a great price point to introduce yourself to this app.

The workflow is powerful, yet very easy to pick up. There are plenty of filter presets and it’s easy to create your own. That’s one of the many great features of this app. And few photo apps give you the level of precision to make adjustments that Process does.

One of the complaints I have about the app is that the latest version is less stable than other photo apps. It has a tendency to crash more often than average. Hopefully, stability issues will be addressed and a one dollar purchase gets you into the upgrade path.

While I believe that iOS app developers should show a profit from their work, I think Process is normally priced way too high at this juncture in the App Store, especially compared to other photo apps available. So, grab it now while it’s on sale. This discount is for a limited time only. Once you have it, Process is a great app to easily explore, create and save your own photo effects.

PhotoForge2 requires at least iOS 4.2. It will run on any device that can install iOS 4.2 or greater. This includes iPhone 3G or newer and iPod Touch 2nd gen or newer. It’s also a Universal app so it will take full advantage of the larger screen real estate of the iPad.
