Cool Link: How to Shoot Jewelry Using an iPhone 4 and a Modahaus

The iPhone is making its way into the studio as more iPhoneographers are using their device under studio conditions. While the iPhone will never replace a good pro Nikon, Hasselblad, or Canon back, it is possible under controlled conditions to get surprisingly good results.

Recently, Modahaus published a blog post that details how to photograph jewelry using an iPhone 4 and a Modahaus Desktop Studio 216. Not only do they share their technique in detail, they also provide some great how-to and sample photos. The results are impressive, given that they were shot with a camera phone.

Cool Links: The Early Verizon iPhone 4 Reviews

The Verizon iPhone 4 streets on February 10 here in the States. The biggest difference between AT&T’s iPhone 4, of course, is the CDMA radio of the new device and the fact that it’s on much-praised Verizon’s network.

Reviews from all over are being released. I’m actually pretty happy with AT&T’s coverage (for the most part) here in Dallas/Fort Worth. Also, the lack of international roaming is a factor for me. We’ll be sticking with AT&T until a more compelling reason to change comes up.

Unable to score a preview device for review, I’m posting links to other reviews, gathered here in one place. Have a look.

Rumor: White iPhone 4 delayed because of camera light leaks?

white iphone 4 lightleak

I may have embellished this image just a little for this post....

.

File this one under “Rumors”.

Cult of Mac is reporting that the long-delayed white iPhone 4 is being delayed not because of mismatched home buttons, light leaking from the case, or antenna issues, but because of light leaks within the camera. You can read their whole story by clicking here.

iPhone 4 and the missing rows of pixels

Although the iPhone 4 camera’s full resolution is 2592x1936px, there are still quite a few apps which are unable to take advantage of the camera’s full 5MP resolution.

There are still a lot of apps that only support up to 2MP or 1600x1200px resolution. Saving full-res iPhone 4 images down to 2MP with these apps often results in an image size of 1600×1196 or 1195 pixels. What happens to the missing 4-5 pixels? It’s actually not a bug in the OS or in the apps themselves.

News: Apple announces iPhone 4 Case Program will end on Sept. 30

Not a cool link, but an important one if you have an iPhone 4. It was a given that Apple’s iPhone 4 Case Program wouldn’t last forever. A recent announcement from Apple pretty much confirms it. Apple has announce that the iPhone 4 Case Program will end on September 30, in about 2 and half weeks.

iOS 4.1 update: Apple Camera HDR is really HDR

Apple iOS 4.1 HDR iPhoneography

Capturing the bracketed exposures of iPhone's new HDR

.

Apple released the iOS 4.1 update for iPhone on Wednesday. Among the new features is HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the Apple Camera. Among the questions when the feature was introduced by Steve Jobs at the iPod event was if it is true HDR or is the camera using “sleight of hand” and simply tweaking the exposure of one capture.

Apple September Event: New iPod Touch, iOS 4 update

.

[UPDATEx3 09.03.10 10:10] Today was Apple’s September Event. Typically an iPod-centric event, there was plenty to please current and future iPhoneographers in today’s presentation. Today’s event was more than the traditional refreshing of the iPod line. The iPod Touch now gets not one, but two cameras — but not the high-resolution still camera that was the buzz of rumor sites.

Apple releases iOS 4.0.2 update for iPhone; patches PDF exploit

Today, Apple released the iOS 4.0.2 update for iPhone. This patch fixes the PDF exploit that allowed recent web-based JailBreakMe, the first jailbreak for iOS 4 and the iPhone 4. Jailbreaking is a process that unlocks the operating system and allows users to download many apps, extensions and themes unavailable through the App Store. It’s a recommended OS update for users — unless your iPhone is jailbroken.

iPhone Photo App Updates for July 20, 2010

In case you don’t obsessively check for app updates like me, here are a few of the more significant photo app updates released within the past few days. Most of these are iOS4 compatibility updates, a few iPhone 4 compatibility updates and various bug fixes. There have been other photo apps updated in the past few days; these are some of the big ones. Check Life In LoFi’s Photo App Compatibility feature for more complete listings.

  • PhotoForge 1.93 has been released. It now supports iOS4 multitasking and has a new, optimized image processing system. I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but PhotoForge should rock on an iPhone 4.
  • Panoramatic 3.0.6 update fixes the iPhone 4 flash-related shutter bug and now also supports tap-to-focus.
  • CameraTAN 2.0.1 now has high-res Retina display support. The update also includes various bug fixes.
  • The 10X Camera Tools — both standard and Pro — got some iOS4 bug fixes but this update still does not address the flash-related shutter bug issue found with many camera apps on the iPhone 4.
