HarrisCamera Updated: Now Supports Full Res

HarrisCamera for iPhone is a recent camera app that creates a “Harris Shutter Effect” (also known as a “Tri-filter Effect”) photo on your iPhone. On film, the effect is produced by re-exposing the same frame of film through red, green and blue filters in turn, usually while keeping the camera steady. I previously reviewed the app here.

The new 1.1 update was just released and fixes my biggest complaint with the app. With this update, HarrisCamera now supports full device resolution — that’s 8 megapixels on an iPhone 4S.

It’s a unique analog effect. This is an easy to use camera app that creates a great effect and is definitely worth checking out.

HarrisCamera is $0.99 in the App Store. Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

FX Photo Studio Updated. Now Fully Supports iPhone 4S

There’s a reason I recommend FX Photo Studio so highly. It’s an easy to use yet powerful app with a broad range of effects. There are effects for everyone from the casual user who just wants to easily add something fun to a photo before sharing to Facebook or Instagram to the more serious iPhoneographer who also demands the ability to adjust the parameters of their production. The developer is great and is always adding new, powerful features.

The 4.5 update of FX Photo Studio was just released. It adds a few new features and bug fixes, including text labels with multiple fonts. Most importantly, the app now supports full 8 megapixel resolution of the iPhone 4S. Up till now, it had downsampled images back to the 5 MP resolution of the iPhone 4. All this, and it’s one of few good apps that will still run on an old iPhone 2G or 3G. The latest versions of Instagram don’t even do that any more.

FX Photo Studio is normally $1.99 in the App Store. Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Instagram is Coming to Android. Finally.

File this under “Speculatron”, but the source is Instagram’s CEO which lends these rumors some credence.

According to a recent report on CNET, a version of the insanely popular iPhone photo app (and Apple’s newly announced 2011 App Store iPhone App of the Year) Instagram is coming to Android. Your Samsung Galaxy toting friends will soon be able to share their photos of lunch and puppies (I’m also guilty of both).

“We have two people working on Android now,” Burbn Chief Executive Kevin Systrom told attendees of the recent LeWeb conference in Paris, France. No other timetable was given, What makes this statement different from the previous mentions of Instagram for Android is that I believe this is the first time Systrom has publicly said there are actually people working on it.

December 13: Hipstamatic Makes Analog Digital… Again?

Hipstamatic December 13 media event

When many users think iPhone photo, they think Hipstamatic. And with good reason. This fun, hipster toy photo app creates great-looking analog film effects and has been at or near the very top of the App Store’s Photo app Sales chart since its introduction. Hipstamatic is so popular, it’s the only photo app to have its own category on this blog.

Tuesday, December 13, Hipstamatic’s Chief Executive Lucas Buick will be holding an informal media event in their San Francisco offices to announce…?

Photo app 6×7 Updated. Image Cache Crash Now Fixed!

6x7 medium format iPhone photo app6×7 is a new photo app from the developer of the square format app 6×6. It’s a basic camera app that shoots in a classic (and little seen in the iPhoneography world) 6 x 7 aspect ratio. I recently reviewed it and gave it four stars. It’s a straightforward, fun app.

6×7 was just updated to version 1.02, adding a couple new features and fixing a few bugs, including the “cache crash” which I found here effecting iPhone 4S.

PicFrame 3: Really, a Massive Update

The new App Store description reads “Another massive update!” I’m always leery of taglines like that, but the new PicFrame version 3 update lives up to massive.

The app now features 34 fully adjustable frames, rounded corners, and plenty of frame patterns. This new update adds many new improvements and features including full support for the new high resolution iPhone 4S. Overall, this is one of the top, if not the current standard for diptych-style photo apps.

VolumeSnap to Go Away – Again?

This has the potential to get ugly and hack a lot of people off — users and developers.

Since the release of iOS 5 and the addition of the Volume Button Shutter in Apple’s Camera, many third party developers have followed suit and implemented the feature in their own apps. Jeff McMorris from CodeGoo, creators of Camera Genius Camera Genius - CodeGoo tells Life In LoFi that Apple has approved these apps “by mistake.”
