ClassicINSTA polaroid camera

Update: Wow! Those went fast! Between Facebook, Twitter and here, we have given out all of our promo codes for ClassicINSTA. If you missed out, stay tuned for more giveaways.  =M=

ClassicINSTA was released over the weekend and we’ve got some free promo codes to give away. ClassicINSTA is the latest release from misskiwi and replicates the look of the classic Kodak instant camera — with far more film and frame styles.

In this excellent initial release, there are ten film styles — all familiar to users of misskiwi’s other apps. The frames are excellently rendered and the film styles are well done and a favorite of mine since misskiwi’s first app, ClassicPAN.

Review: Film Lab for iPhone. Amazing analog film styles.

Film Lab
Version 1.0
Price: $0.99
FILM

Rating 4 stars

Bottom line: Great renditions of A TON of classic film stocks. An orientation bug needs to be fixed though.

Film Lab for iPhoneNot all film stocks are created equal. Photos shot with AGFA ISO 100 film looked much different than shooting with Kodak ISO 100 film. The unique formulations of the films and the different chemistries needed to process them gave each film its own unique color characteristics. For instance, the Fuji films I preferred to shoot with were cooler than many Kodak films, which tended to be warmer and more color saturated.

Film Lab is the latest photo app from CLBITZ Ubiquitous Communications, the makers of Retro Camera. Although it’s not perfect, iPhoneographers who used to shoot with film or who want to recreate the look of analog film stocks will love Film Lab.

Live FX
Version 1.0.1

Rating 4 stars

Bottom line: A great app for someone who is willing to invest the time to master the various filter combinations.

Live FX iphoneography Best CameraLiveFX is a new app from Nick Drabovich/IMAPPL which allows you to easily create and apply thousands of unique photo effects by means of filter “stacking.” The app features a unique live preview which displays selected effects in the viewfinder before shooting.

It’s a good app. It reminds me of Best Camera with a lot more filters. It’s possible to create some great effects with this app.

Review: Slow Shutter Cam for iPhone

Slow Shutter Cam for iPhone

Slow Shutter Cam sample image

Slow Shutter Cam
Version 1.1
Price: $1.99
Slow

Rating 4 stars

Bottom line: The excellent motion blur effects make this app worthwhile despite not supporting full resolution.

Slow Shutter Cam for iPHone[UPDATED 10.19.10 @14:45]

Slow Shutter Cam by Cogitap Software is an app that simulates control over exposure and shutter speed. The long exposures and slow shutter effect can be used to compensate for low-light situations. Where the app excels, though, is its ability to create some really superb blur effects.

Slow Shutter Cam does not actually change the shutter speed of the iPhone’s camera, which is fixed. Through software magic, it mimics the camera effects available with a variable shutter.

The app has some flaws, but it also creates some really great effects that I’ve seen no other app produce. It’s one of those rare photography apps that creates effects that few others are capable of, and it does it easily and with better results.

Glyn Evans: iQuikSplash gets update, but has it improved?

Recently, I announced iQuikSplash and wrote a mini review of the app, giving it my worst ever score, 0 stars.

The developer of the app posted the following comment…

“The app was created to splash a color. Not an object. The app selectively highlights shades of the color you selected, in this case red. In case of a photo like yours here, you will need to use the “Area Quiksplash” function (added in Version 1.2) – where you can define the area you want to splash, but there is no need to be accurate, since the app will do the selection for you. Version 1.2 should be out in a day or so.

“As for needing to rotate after loading a photo, that is requirement from Apple, the photo picker is not allowed to be shown in landscape mode (The app was rejected because of displaying the picker in landscape mode). I may switch the app to work in Portrait in the future if it bothers most users.”

In response to my rating, version 1.2 was released recently with following new features/enhancements.

Review: Andigraf for iPhone

Kroger Sushi, Andigraf lomo for iPhoneography

Sample image from Andigraf

Andigraf
Version 1.0.1

Rating 4 stars

Bottom line: Great filters help make this camera more fun than you’re expecting

AndigrafAndigraf by Subkernel is a new camera in the Quad-cam, Supersampler style. It’s an app that takes serial photography, using one of four multi-lens configurations from 4 to 9 lenses. It also features several “film styles” to apply filter effects to your images. Currently, there are four film styles — GrafPhoto Color, LoMode Turquoise, GrafProfessional Black&White, and 1945S Classic Sepia with more films promised in future updates.

Serial photography is a lot more fun than you would initially think and I really like this app!

Review: BeFunky FX

BeFunky for iPhone

BeFunky FX
Version 1.0

Rating 2 stars

Bottom line: Great looking effects, but low resolution output and other problems spoil the app.

BeFunky FX for iPhoneBeFunky FX is a new app from BeFunky that applies really nice edgy effects to your images. BeFunky has several other iPhone apps which apply a variety of effects to your images. Review: Sloppy Borders for iPhone

Sloppy Borders
version 1.0

Rating 2 stars

Bottom line: Good edges, but a little sloppy in the implementation. Needs improvement. UPDATE: Doesn’t play well with the iPhone 4 and the new iOS. Review downgraded to 2 stars.

Sloppy Borders app for iPhoneSloppy Borders is a new app from Jayms Ramirez Photography which adds old-school, film-style edges to your photographs. The effect is based on filed out negative carriers — sometimes called “sloppy” — which add a black line around a full frame image.

Sloppy Borders is easy to use, creates good-looking edges and nice effects, but does not save at high-resolutions in the version 1.0 release I tested.

Review: imphoto (Standard) for iPhone

imphoto (Standard version)
Version 2.0

Rating 2 stars

Bottom line: Requires a pricey upgrade to save at full-res or remove copyright mark.

imphoto for iPhone is an exposure enhancement app from imsense. Although the Standard version normally sells for $1.99 USD, from reading the App Store reviews, it’s often on sale (or free) and I picked it up for $0.99. The standard version has too many annoyances and disabled features to be really useful. It feels like a try-before-you-buy demo app and should be priced for free or at least allow the option of removing the annoying copyright mark.

Review: Flash Hero for iPhone

Flash Hero
Version 1.2

Rating 2 stars

Bottom line: Two of the three filters work poorly.

Flash Hero for iPhoneFlash Hero is a new “flash fixer” app from Asasa Software which uses three different kinds of exposure enhancements to fix the lighting of a photo.

No two images are the same and many times an exposure enhancement app that does a great job on one image works poorly with another. That’s why I keep several exposure enhancers in my iPhone. Flash Hero attempts to give you three different types of exposure enhancement in one app. The idea is that of the three, one of them will work best to fix your image. It’s a great concept. Unfortunately, two of the filters work poorly and the third is redundant and unnecessary if you already have another slider-based flash fixer, such as Perfectly Clear, Auto Adjust or FlashPhix. All three of these apps produce better results more easily.
