There are a lot of striking portraits in the showcase this week, ranging from dreamscapes to noir style to very stylized. It’s a great range of captures. Not only are they great portraits, but how the artist chose to app these really enhances the images and adds to the feel of the image. This, I think, is one of the great aspects of iPhone photography.

The lede this week is one of the dreamscapes featuring the rhino from Janine Graf. I love these series of images. On one level, they’re just playful. On a deeper level, one could say that a rhino floating by balloons is (no pun intended) uplifting.

Wyethia has been sharing her striking, often powerful self portraits here for some time. The lede this week is one of her softer self-portraits. As another viewer aptly described this image, “Seems about emergence, power and verve.” That sums it up. Wyethia has a set of self-portraits where she explores many emotional themes. I recommend you check it out in her Flickr stream.

The lede this week is another fantastic work from Ali Jardine. The image touches upon dreams on many levels. I love the oversaturated colors that add to the dreamlike quality of the image. For me, the juggling comes inside the dream itself — a very interesting and playful image. The child as subject gives the photo a wonderful sense of innocence.

This week’s lede image is a stark, simple, powerful black & white portrait from Vic Bonilla. In addition to an image that lands just outside of mainstream, the photo itself is beautiful in its composition and contrasts and is a very creative use of Hipstamatic’s new tintype-style lens and film. Brilliant all around.

iPhone Artist Sarah Jarrett was awarded the MPA iPhone Photographer Artist of the Year this week and i thought it appropriate that her playful, slightly surreal “22″ lead off the set this week. It’s a classic example of her current works, which draws more from natural media art and combines almost-related elements into powerful and visually interesting images.

Because of Macworld and other commitments, the weekly Faved feature was on hiatus for a couple of weeks. It’s back and today’s showcase features a few of the thousands of images submitted over the past few weeks. Click on to see this week’s showcase. >>>

It’s a larger than usual showcase this week. When looking through the recent submissions preparing this post, I saw a lot of very moving images. There were a lot of outstanding images that were very emotionally powerful. I’ve shared some of the more powerful images here.

This week’s lede image is a beautiful, warm, slightly surreal portrait from Aylin Argun.

“Cross” by Ichut invokes the tranquility, memories and feelings of a dusty back road. “It’ll Get Worse Before it Gets Better” by Emily Rose and “You used to think me beautiful” by Wyethia are both visually powerful and emotionally wrenching images. In contrast, Ali Jardine’s “On a String” is playful and carefree. Despite its scale, “light as a feather” by komeda is a misty, quiet moment stolen from a distance.

There are some personal and beautiful pieces this week. There are plenty of great, fairly raw images, stunning landscapes, all the way to intricately apped art. It’s another great iPhonography showcase. Keep reading to see all of the images. >>>

I love images that are outside of what you expect from an artist’s established style. This week’s showcase has several of those. The lede photo this week is a simple, joyous, yet very personal photo from Dirk Dallas whose works shared here are often street shots with great lines and geometry. This week’s selection also includes two very beautiful personal images from Souichi Furusho and Benamon Tame who are both better known for their abstracts. One other notable image this week is Sarah Jarrett’s excellent portrait of The Duchess, which offers a great counterpoint to the less-playful official version.

There are many excellent pieces in this week’s showcase to start the new year off. This week’s lede image by Rebecca Laflam is a minimalistic coda to a Project 365. I love the “Happy New Year” (which is a fitting start for this feature this week) contrasted with the an almost deadpan look of resolution. Other notable images this week are Paula Gardener’s great capture of her Mr. G on holiday, caught midair, midstroke in the sea; several very surreal Dali-esque dreamscapes from Ali Jardine, Janine Graf and w_stairs; a chilling, haunting image from Jamie Stewart and don’t forget to click My Daily Sublime’s excellent pano “Longscape Four.”

Best of the Best: Life In LoFi’s Top iPhoneography of 2012

Over the course of 2012, about 50,000 images were submitted to Life In LoFi’s Flickr Group. Of those, about 750 were selected for our weekly showcase. 500 of those images would be 1%. There are only 50 here. To appear in the top 0.01% of anything is quite an honor.

Here are what I feel to be the best of those images. This is our year-end Faved On Flickr Showcase — The Best of Life In LoFi for 2012.

This is the toughest showcase of the year to do. Here are the images that I feel are the top images we’ve run in our Faved showcases. These are images that made a connection to me somehow. Not all are representative of each iPhoneographer or iPhone artist’s style, but they are images that I found powerful, moving, unique, stunning, personal or often a combination of all of those.

2013 will be the third year Life In LoFi has been presenting the Faved On Flickr showcases. The quality and impact of the image is the most important criteria for me when choosing these. That’s why works from iPhoneography’s “rock stars” are often displayed alongside newer artists who may not have the recognition yet. Many of these works have appeared in other websites showcases; many haven’t. All of them represent what I feel are among the best works created this year shot and processed using only an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

These images are Life In LoFi’s Best of the Best. They go back to the first showcase of 2012. To narrow these down from the thousands submitted was not an easy task. I tried to get it down to about two dozen images like last year’s list, but didn’t want to cut any further, so my apologies for the length of the post. I’d like to thank all fo the iPhonegraphers who shared their works to our Flickr group, and a special shout out to all the artists who made this selection.

Here is our weekly iPhoneography showcase, Faved On Flickr. These are just a few of the excellent photographs and artworks that are shared to Life In LoFi’s Flickr group.

This week, Life In LoFi’s Flickr Group hit a a huge milestone. Over 150,000 images have now been shared to the group. It’s a strong collection built on the quality of the images submitted. My sincere thanks to all the iPhoneographers who’ve help make this Flickr group of of the largest and best iPhoneography Flickr groups over the years.

For those of you new to this blog or maybe just discovering iPhoneography, Faved On Flickr is our regular showcase that features what other iPhoneographers — some established, some fairly new — are creating with their iPhones. Hopefully, these images will inspire you to explore your creative side.

It’s one of the longest-running iPhoneography showcases on the web. Life In LoFi’s Flickr group currently has nearly 150,000 submissions since these posts began years ago. Looking back through the group is a time capsule of how iPhoneographers have evolved the art.

This week, there are a lot of great photographs which are fairly unprocessed. One of the things that drew me to iPhoneography is that the world is constantly giving us great photo opps and having an iPhone — the camera that’s with you — makes it easy to grab them.

The lede image this week is the dark, haunting, disturbingly beautiful “Eve with Antlers” by BlemishedEye. It’s the third in a great series.

Also in this week’s showcase are great photos, abstracts, portraits, candids and iPhone art from Roger Guetta, Michael Sutton, Robert-Paul Jansen, misspixels, iPhoneOgenic’s Edi Caves, Lynette Jackson, Jennifer Ford, Dave Weekes a couple of images from xxfromneptune, and many others. There’s also a great, timeless portrait from Emily Rose that she shot soon after the new Hipstamatic Tintype pak was released and Shel Serkin’s poignant holiday pic, “Nicholas”.

It was a busy week for Flickr. The excellent new Flickr app was released and Life In LoFi’s Flickr group got a ton of great new iPhoneography submissions. I’m not sure if the two are related, but I’ll be talking about the new Flickr update on the blog soon.

Mansi Bhatia has been sharing wonderful and emotionally powerful abstracts and abstract self-portraits on Faved for some time. This week’s lede is her self-portrait “Losing myself”. I love the colors and textures in this image. How she’s treated her eyes in this piece creates a complex, thought-provoking image.

We’re back from hiatus. Here is this week’s Faved On Flickr, one of the longest-running iPhoneography showcases on the web. These are some of the excellent images chosen from the those shared to Life In LoFi’s Flickr group.

It’s been several weeks since the last Faved (day job and other obligations). Since then, iPhoneographers have submitted and shared thousands of great images. These are just a few of the many images that caught my eye.

Because of the gap, I’ve gone back to October for this week’s Faved and there’s a good selection of styles, including some creative and powerful portraits, stark landscapes and ethereal abstracts.

This week’s lede is a colorful abstract by Roger Guetta. It’s a great piece of Pop art with influences from Warhol and Lichtenstein.

There are many other interesting images in this week’s showcase. In particular, I really love Paula Gardiner’s stark self-portrait “Scars of life” and the creative use of the app Harris Camera in Sarah Zucker’s clever “Necessary Regalia.” I love the tones and soft textures of Maddy McCoy’s selections from her “The Fan” series. Taken as a cohesive work, the images span movement and emotions.

A little late this week, but a great showcase nonetheless. Here is this week’s Faved On Flickr, featuring some of the excellent iPhoneography chosen from Life In LoFi on Flickr. These selections are just a few of the thousand-plus photos shared each week to the pool.

There are a lot of great photographs in this week’s showcase — many found moments which were captured by the convenience of an iPhone camera. They are great photographs regardless of the equipment.

This week’s lead photo is a beautiful, serene, textured landscape of the sagano bamboo groves in arashiyama, kyoto from librarymook. The stark black and white processing removes the distraction of color from this image, allowing the viewer to reflect on the quiet of the captured moment.

Here is this week’s Faved On Flickr, featuring some of the excellent iPhoneography chosen from Life In LoFi on Flickr. These are just a few of the thousand-plus photos shared each week to the pool.

For this first weekend of autumn, this week’s showcase is a little dark and brooding, but filled great, powerful images, great photography and iPhone art.

The lead photo this week is by Ginger Lucero. Usually, Ginger creates very dark, textured, and sexy abstracts, as in her recent Vamp series. “Don’t Look Behind You” is a powerful departure from her usual subject matter. It’s a great yet emotionally distrubing image that captures the terrifying feeling of the moment.

iPhoneographer Souichi Furusho is one of our more long-standing contributors to this feature and has the lead photo this week. Known for his abstracts and dreamscapes, “Image pic #67″ combines elements from some of his classic images with simplicity of contrast and a lot of white space. It’s a powerful image. I also really like “LookOut” by Robert-Paul Jansen with it’s very Hipgnosis / Storm Thorgerson influences.

I missed this feature’s anniversary last week. It’s been just over two years — Sunday, August 22, 2010. Faved On Flickr started with this image by Jose Chavarry. Here is this week’s Faved On Flickr. I started sharing these iPhoneography showcases in August, 2010, which makes this one of the longest-running mobile photography showcases on the web. Here are some of the excellent images chosen from the those shared to Life In LoFi’s Flickr group.

This week, there are plenty of what I call “found moments” that is one of the things that iPhone photography excels at. As your camera is usually so accessible — the one that’s with you — photographers are now able to capture so many of those perfect photographic moments that used to be lost. This is different than street photography or candid photography. It’s capturing the spirit of a fleeting moment to preserve and share.

Paul Moore has created some stunning landscapes throughout his catalog. The are often huge in scope but draw the viewer in. Because of the perspectives and the procesing he uses, they’re almost dreamscapes. Almost…. This week’s lead image, “Passing Train,” is a another of his excellent landscapes and one of my favorites from his works. It’s another big image that’s best viewed as large as possible.
