Musings: Leaked iPhone: Awesome Camera?

I rarely like to report on rumors and speculation, but this genie is already out of the bottle.

It looks like those leaked photos and details over at Gizmodo of a possible next-generation iPhone prototype (the iPhone HD perhaps?) are probably genuine. When Apple goes after leaked info or devices, it’s usually a good indication that the item in question is the real deal and yesterday, they asked Gizmodo for their property to be returned.

If it’s real — and I think it is genuine — it’s a beautiful device. It’s almost enough to draw me away from T-Mobile and their relatively inexpensive all-you-can-eat plans and drink the much pricier AT&T Kool-Aid.

The goods on the rumored new camera is below. Read on….

Update: Wow! Those went fast! Between Facebook, Twitter and here, we have given out all of our promo codes for ClassicINSTA. If you missed out, stay tuned for more giveaways.  =M=

ClassicINSTA was released over the weekend and we’ve got some free promo codes to give away. ClassicINSTA is the latest release from misskiwi and replicates the look of the classic Kodak instant camera — with far more film and frame styles.

In this excellent initial release, there are ten film styles — all familiar to users of misskiwi’s other apps. The frames are excellently rendered and the film styles are well done and a favorite of mine since misskiwi’s first app, ClassicPAN.

What I’ve Learned About iPhoneography, by Jason L. Parks

How to take good iPhoneography, Jason L. Parks

iPhoneography by Jason L. Parks

-

To those just starting in iPhoneography, welcome. iPhoneography is the microwaved version of art. It is instant gratification to take a photo, edit, and share it with the world. Some may view our work as a novelty but to those who embrace and try to understand the iPhone’s limitations, it’s rewarding to produce art with what some categorize as a “toy camera.”

A gift and a curse of mine has been to pick up a hobby and become consumed by it. I’ve emailed and direct message my fair share of iPhoneographers in an attempt to learn more. One thing I learned early in life is to surround yourself with those who you view as better in a particular field so that you may become more competent yourself. Not only did I ask questions of them but I looked through their bodies of work, leaving comments, hearts, and faves in attempt to understand iPhoneography and photography as a whole and become better in my own work. Here are a few of the lessons I’ve picked up along the away from some of my favorite iPhoneographers.

Skyline

Toolbox: Perfectly Clear, Film Lab

On a man-made peninsula on the shores of Lake Michigan, a small building and a control tower still stand — all that remains of Chicago’s third airport, Meigs Field. The runway was destroyed years ago and the land was restored to nature.

The old terminal building still stands. Now as part of the park, guests are allowed to go into the starkly furnished building. Most of the furniture is gone — only a few airport chairs in the upstairs lounge.

I never got to fly through Meigs, but as I explored the building, with its spectacular view of the downtown skyline, I felt the ghosts of airports past when there were no security lines to clear and when smoking was still allowed on flights.

I love airports — even old ones.

A taxi, a bus, a train, and one MD-80 later, we are back in DFW from our trip to Chicago.

Chicago is one of my favorite cities on the planet period and as many Windy City iPhoneographers will attest, it’s a gorgeous city to photograph.

Many of the images I found myself taking this trip lent themselves to processing in Film Lab. One of the things that I liked about using the app was the surprising ability to stack effects. For instance, the high contrast monochrome of the L above was achieved by layering Fuji Neopan 1600 over EPP High Contrast – Blue. The surreal, grainy colors of the bottom L were acheived by stacking EPP High Contrast – Blue over itself.

I’ve got to get caught up on some deadlines for the day job. I’ll be posting more photography from Chicago throughout the coming days.

Bottom line: Great renditions of A TON of classic film stocks. An orientation bug needs to be fixed though.

Film Lab for iPhoneNot all film stocks are created equal. Photos shot with AGFA ISO 100 film looked much different than shooting with Kodak ISO 100 film. The unique formulations of the films and the different chemistries needed to process them gave each film its own unique color characteristics. For instance, the Fuji films I preferred to shoot with were cooler than many Kodak films, which tended to be warmer and more color saturated.

Film Lab is the latest photo app from CLBITZ Ubiquitous Communications, the makers of Retro Camera. Although it’s not perfect, iPhoneographers who used to shoot with film or who want to recreate the look of analog film stocks will love Film Lab.
