Decim8 1.3 update released. Includes new effect.

Decim8's new Fingerblib effect

.

decim8

I’m seeing more and more iPhoneography munged very creatively using the photo app Decim8. The corrupted JPEG effects are refreshingly different from the large numbers of analog-style photo apps available.

Hot on the heels of the Decim8 1.2 update, Kris Collins has released the 1.3 update. While the previous update improved the stability of the app, the new update adds a new filter — one of the more popular user requests for this app.

The Verizon iPhone 4: What you need to know

Welcome, future Verizon iPhoneographers.

After years of rumors, the iPhone 4 has finally come to the Verizon network here in the US. The rumors have been floating around for a couple of years, but quite honestly I didn’t hold any stock in them until I read details about the very significant and very quiet upgrade Verizon gave its network in Austin, Texas in the middle of 2010. Hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Thinking about getting a Verizon iPhone? Here’s what we know after today’s Verizon iPhone event.

CameraTAN updated. New look and features.

Before and after: CameraTAN's new facelift

.

CameraTAN from MorokoshiMan is the toy camera app with the cryptic names but creates some good effects. It’s just been updated to version 3.2. The app gets yet another facelift, a new icon, and several new features. It now creates over 40 well-rendered and interesting toy camera effects. Multiple filter effects can easily be added to an image.

We covered the previous facelift in the the 3.0 update here. If you missed it, it’s a good read with CameraTAN tips and a link to an effects grid.

iPhoneography: Rotary Dial

Rotary Dial

Photographed with an iPhone 4.
Toolbox: Hipstamatic (lens: Melodie, film: BlacKeys B+W)

American Science and Surplus
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
December 24, 2010

If you are ever in Milwaukee, apart from the beer and a highly recommended 5 Card Studs show, you should also stop at American Science and Surplus. It’s been at the same location on West Oklahoma Avenue since Dr. Research was making educational films for Frank Capra.

Stroll through the aisles. You’ll find joy buzzers, sea monkeys, beakers, HAZMAT suits, old pens, and even old rotary dial telephones. It’s like Archie McPhee without the Yodeling Pickles. Oh no wait… that’s aisle 1.

They also have a real Tesla Coil. I want one. Sadly, it’s not for sale, but if you ask nicely, they may fire it up for you.

GoodPaks don’t restore in Hipstamatic 185. Problem fixed in the upcoming 190 update

Hipstamatic 190's new Download Manager

There have been scattered reports of users being unable to restore Hipstamatic’s new limited edition GoodPaks, specifically the discontinued Levi’s® GoodPak with the popular Melodie lens. Hipstamatic’s GoodPaks are the recently introduced limited-edition lens and filter sets. As previously reported here, users should be able to restore GoodPaks that have passed their sales dates.

Bracket Mode for iPhone is FREE right now in the App Store

Cogitap’s excellent Bracket Mode is FREE right now in the App Store for a limited time — that’s a savings of $0.99. I gave the app four stars — click here for my original review.

Bracket Mode is an HDR utility that automatically takes two exposures — one dark and one lighter. Rather than processing them right away, Bracket Mode then saves the two images to your camera roll so you can process them later by importing them into another third-party, bracketed exposure HDR app like TrueHDR or ProHDR. Bracket Mode can have you shooting again in less than 5 seconds — much faster than waiting for a third party HDR app to shoot and process. If you shoot with TrueHDR or ProHDR, you need this app.

This giveaway is for a limited time only, so download it now!

Bracket Mode works on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 4th Gen running iOS 4.2 or newer.

iPhoneography: Faved on Flickr 01.09.11

her balance

her balance by Emily Rose

.

Every Sunday, we present a small number of the outstanding images that were posted to the Life In LoFi group on Flickr recently.

Wow. It was a prolific holiday season for iPhoneographers. In the two weeks since the last Faved, over 80 pages of images were uploaded to the Life In LoFi Flickr group. Even if you don’t upload, please be sure to look over our Flickr group. There are many many many great images that don’t get posted here.

For the first collection of Faved on Flickr for 2011, I’m pleased to present another strong collection of images. It was very difficult narrowing down the choices for this week’s post.

Cool Link: How To Make a Hipstamatic Camera Case for an iPhone

Photo courtesy of Tragically Hipstamatic Blog

A while back, we posted a link for making your iPhone 4 look like a Leica M8 camera. In case you missed it, Tragically Hipstamatic blog recently posted a similar method for skinning your iPhone 4 to look like a “Hipstamatic 185″ case. It’s a cool project and pretty easy to make. You’ll need an Xacto knife, a small OLFA knife or some other fine utility knife.

Tragically Hipstamatic writes in a January 2, 2011 post:

My iPhone 4 is a camera that I sometimes use to make phone calls, and with that in mind I endeavoured to make my iPhone look like the camera I use the most: the Hipstamatic.

iPhone App Review: Pocketbooth – a fun photo booth on your iPhone

.

Pocketbooth
Version 1.2
Price: $0.99
Pocketbooth - Project Box

Rating 4 stars

Bottom Line: A very fun and nostalgic snapshot app, for less than the cost of one real-world photo strip.

The photo booth is enjoying a resurgence and popping up all over — malls, tourist areas, arcades, amusement parks. There’s even a “Photogenic” badge on FourSquare for checking into three venues with a photo booth.

Pocketbooth by Project Box is a very fun app for taking snapshots based on the style of an old photo booth — according to the app’s description, a 1950′s-era Model 11 photo booth. Pocketbooth adds a cool, nostalgic twist to taking snapshots. This app is fun to play with. I really like Pocketbooth.

App Store Review: Colaroid Cam PRO. Useless.

Nothing to enlarge. This is a Colaroid full res pic.

Colaroid Cam PRO
Version 1.1
Price: Free for a limited time

Rating 1 star

UPDATED 01.10.11

Colaroid Cam PRO is yet another fake Polaroid app. This one has more colored frames than you’ll ever need.

The interface is pretty clunky and needs a lot of work. It saves a fake Polaroid at a low 500×603 px resolution or a super low-res, 320×480 px screen capture of the entire screen — image, background and all. It even saves to the camera roll as a PNG file — the format of screen captures. Lazy programming.

In Edit mode — the tiny 320×480 mode, the image itself is bordered by a wrinkled brown paper background, making the effective size of the photo even smaller and the quality of the image horrible. There are a lot of other fake Polaroid apps available and they all support higher resolution, so really, how hard can it be?
