ClassicTOY 5 Preview

classictoy for iPhone iPod TouchThe ClassicCAM apps from misskiwi are a favorite of mine. The film and lens filters create gorgeous effects with characteristics that are unmatched by no other apps.

ClassicTOY is a very versatile plastic toy camera app that emulates a number of classic, lo-fi toy cameras. An update has been submitted to the App Store. Version 5 should hit iTunes any time. We’ve got a preview of some of the several new features in the upcoming version.

Instagram 101: Get your comments seen by your InstaFriends

Instagram iPhoneDespite its current 612×612 pixel resolution, Instagram is a hugely popular photo app. It makes it very easy to shoot a photos and share them with a number of social networks, including Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and its own Instagram network. It’s a pretty fun app and I’ve been using it myself (@martyneardfw on Instagram).

Often, the dialog is one way. Photos can be “liked” and comments left. Unfortunately, leaving a comment on another buddy’s photo doesn’t always guarantee that the intended recipient will see what you wrote, especially if the photo has moved pretty far down their photostream. Here’s a quick and easy way to help make sure your buddies see comments posted on other’s photos in Instagram.

App Update: AutoStitch Panorama – Now with background stitching

AutoStitch 3 iPhoneAutoStitch Panorama 3.1 from Cloudburst Research has just hit the App Store. The improvements include optimizations for the iPod Touch 4th Gen,  a new retina display-ready icon, bug fixes and a very nice feature I’ve been wanting for a while — background support for iOS 4.

In my opinion, AutoStitch Panorama is the best pano app available. It can be used to create much more than just panoramas. You can use it to create interesting ghost effects and “bend” effects as well. This update makes it much nicer to use in iOS 4.

Review: CameraFlash+

.

CameraFlash+
Version 1.0
Price: Free, with an additional $0.99 in-app upgrade
CameraFlash+ - G-Power

Rating 1 star

Bottom Line: Not that great, not even for free

cameraflash plusCameraFlash+ is a new exposure enhancing app from G-Power which promises to improve the overall luminance of iPhone photographs. It automatically calculates optimized lighting settings for each pixel, helping to compensate for some of the limitations of an iPhone’s camera — especially older iPhones or the new iPod Touch 4th Gen.

This app still needs a lot of work. CameraFlash+ is a frustratingly buggy piece of software. I wanted to review it on my iPhone 2G using iOS 3.1 — a device that can really use an exposure enhancer — but it crashed on opening 100% of the time.

iPhone Life Magazine Buyer’s Guide is available now

iPhone Life magazine cover

The November-December 2010 issue of iPhone Life Magazine is available now. It’s their first annual Buyer’s Guide issue and contains a lot of good information to help you guide iPhone-related purchases, including all kinds of apps, hardware and iPhone accessories. Actually, I call issues like these a wish list. The issue also covers the new iPod Touch 4th Generation.

Included in the issue on page 66 are the “10 Best iPhone Photo Apps”, an article which I wrote for the magazine. Have a look. If you only had $25 to spend on apps — say, a $25 App Store Gift Card — this list is a good place to start for many iPhoneographers who are just discovering the art.

The Buyer’s Guide issue is available in bookstores now. A one year subscription to iPhone Life Magazine is only $24.97. Right now, there’s a special offer where you can get six issues by Zinio digital subscription, for only $12.97 US.

eyephoneography Madrid. What happened.

eyephoneography, The Hub, Madrid, SpainEarlier this year in September, Madrid, Spain hosted its first iPhone photography exhibition, eyephoneography #1, at an artist’s collective called The Hub-Madrid. The show was unexpectedly suspended after the photographs were taken down, damaged or destroyed. The show was vandalized.

Few details were released while this was under investigation. Marco La Civita, one of the artists featured in the show and who has close ties to the organizers of eyephoneography, has broken the silence and released a little bit of information about the events of last September. It’s a short read, but it’s an insight into some of the political gamesmanship that occurs in the art world.

Review: SpyPic – a good stealth camera for candid photography

spypics iphone screenshots

.

SpyPic
Version 1.1
Price: $1.99
SpyPic - Imaginary Feet, LLC

Rating 3 1/2 stars

Bottom Line: Overall, a surprisingly good camouflage cam with configurable screens. One or two bugs and many users may find the $1.99 price tag a little high for what it does.

SpyPic iPhoneI’m not completely brave. When shooting street photography, my biggest fear is getting caught. Overall, people in Dallas/Fort Worth are not used to seeing street photographers create their art. Stealth is key to capturing the moment undetected. As I call it “stealing souls”.

SpyPic by Imaginary Feet is a camouflage camera that let’s you take candid pictures while your device’s screen shows other activity. It has a few extra features that I like over other stealth cams, including easily adjustable viewfinder transparency and changeable screens that look like you’re actually doing something on your iPhone — a big improvement over other stealth cams that simply black out your screen.
