iPhone App Review: Photo Mixer – If Noise Were “Mixing”….

Photo Mixer for iPhone 4 – Mix your photos
Version 1.0
Price: $2.99

Rating 1 star

Bottom Line: Expensive for an app. Doesn’t work properly. Doesn’t do much when it does. A horrible app.

I really don’t like shredding apps. I’d rather just ignore bad apps and hope they disappear on their own. But some apps are so bad, they should come with warning labels.

Consider this a warning label for Photo Mixer for iPhone 4. I dropped three bucks so you don’t have to.

Cool Link: How to Shoot Jewelry Using an iPhone 4 and a Modahaus

The iPhone is making its way into the studio as more iPhoneographers are using their device under studio conditions. While the iPhone will never replace a good pro Nikon, Hasselblad, or Canon back, it is possible under controlled conditions to get surprisingly good results.

Recently, Modahaus published a blog post that details how to photograph jewelry using an iPhone 4 and a Modahaus Desktop Studio 216. Not only do they share their technique in detail, they also provide some great how-to and sample photos. The results are impressive, given that they were shot with a camera phone.

iPhone Photo Gear Review: Glif for iPhone 4

Recently, I’ve seen several conversations on Twitter and Facebook discussing tripod mounts for an iPhone.

The Glif is a simple iPhone 4 accessory with two primary functions: mounting your iPhone onto a tripod and propping up your iPhone at various angles. It’s been out for a while and we’ve featured it in the past here on the blog, but have never reviewed it, until now.

Cool Gear: SnapMountâ„¢ Tripod Mount for iPhone 4

I don’t know how I missed this back in February, but here’s a pretty cool piece of gear — the SnapMountâ„¢ Tripod Mount for iPhone 4.

As the popularity of iPhone photography grows, so has the number of devices to mount an iPhone to a tripod. They range from spring-loaded clamps all the way to the supremely cool OWLE Bubo. If you’re looking for a lightweight and inexpensive tripod mount, the SnapMountâ„¢ looks like it’s worth checking out.

iPhone 911: “I Just Updated an App on my iPhone. Now It Won’t Open”

My iPhone 4's memory usage before and after a quit-all and reboot.

I’m not sure why this happens. I just know that I’ve been seeing more of it recently. I’ll download the new update of an app that worked great before. And then when I try to open it… CRASH!

I’m sure it has something to do with memory or how another poorly coded app has made the stack unstable (I don’t know the exact technical specifics). The bottom line is, my app crashes.

If this sounds familiar, here are a few steps you can take to try and bring a crashy app to a usable state before you fire off that 1-star App Store review. >>>

HipstaCase 100 Now Available for Pre-Order

I have to admit, when Hipstamatic first arrived in the App Store, I regularly checked a particular camera store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to see if one of those mythical cameras would ever turn up in their graveyard. It’s Mike Crivello’s in Shorewood, by the way. If anybody would have had a Hipstamatic, they would. Of course, we know that was a fruitless endeavor.

My preview HipstaCase 100 arrived in the mail yesterday and it’s the closest we’ll get to shooting with a physical Hipstamatic. I’ve got ordering info and a discount code for free shipping after the jump. >>>

iPhone 101: Rebooting your iPhone 4

Your iPhone is a computer. To help keep it running smooth, rebooting should be a regular part of your iPhone’s maintenance. When I did Mac desktop support, rebooting the computer fixed about half the problems. Seriously.

The iPhone 4 — both the original GSM model and the new Verizon CDMA model — really needs more than just an occasion reboot. On any iPhone running iOS4, also quitting all open apps will help free up even more memory on the device and help RAM-intensive apps run more stable. I recommend this for any iDevice — iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad — running iOS 4.0 or newer.

pic.me iPhone 4 Tripod Case in the Works

Back in December, 2010, I reviewed the pic.me Tripod Case for iPhone 3G/3GS. It’s a lightweight and low profile case that that transforms into a multi-angle tripod stand and a viewing stand. At the time, I wrote,

The pic.me iPhone case is an attractive case that offers good protection for your iPhone from everyday scratches and bumps. The built-in “kickstand” is a great substitute for users who may otherwise want a tripod simply for time lapse or to get into their own photos. It’s also a great stand for watching video or playing games on your iPhone. Overall, it’s a good case. It packs a lot into a little.

Now, an iPhone 4 version of the case is in the works.
