iTunes App Store returns from vacation tomorrow, 12/29/2010

If you’re like me and obsessively hit the App Store app hourly to check for new photo apps and updates, you’ve probably noticed that things have been quiet there since last Thursday. That’s because iTunes Connect has been closed for the holidays. For the user, this means that no apps, updates or sales went live from Thursday, December 23, 2010 through Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Updates and new apps should return tomorrow, December 29, 2010. I’m expecting a flood.

How to spot an App Store “shill” review

App Store sketchy star ratings shill review

There are now over 300,000 apps available in the Apple App Store. With that number of apps available and new ones being released every day, it’s difficult for a developer to get exposure and chart placement for their apps. Getting an app into a category’s Top 100 in the App Store gives apps greater visibility and exposure and can mean the difference between selling thousands of copies of an app or dozens. A few unscrupulous developers resort to fake “shill” reviews in order to improve chart position and increase sales.

REAL-CAMERA app pulled from the App Store

The excellent camera replacement app Camera+ was pulled from the App Store recently. The app violated the iPhone SDK agreement. A hack that unlocked VolumeSnap, the hidden feature that allowed users to use the iPhone’s volume buttons as a shutter release, was the reason.

REAL-CAMERA by Yusuke sekikawa is another iPhone photo app that uses the volume buttons as a shutter release. As expected, it has now also been pulled and is no longer available in the App Store.
