The Camera+ 2.1 update was released today. The update adds a few new features, improves performance and some of the filters. It’s alos on sale for a limited time for only $0.99 — that’s half off the normal price of $1.99. This is easily one of the top shooters available in the App Store. This new update improves the app. This sale makes it very hard to resist if you don’t already have it.
Bottom Line: A good camera app, but a little slow and light on features when compared to Camera+.
Camtastic is a farily new camera replacement app from Indeeo. The 1.1.1 update was released recently and I’m glad I held off on my review of Camtastic until a couple of updates had been pushed out. The two recent updates have really improved the performance of the app.
Camtastic has many of the features, but not all, that I look for in a camera replacement app. If you don’t already have a camera replacement app like Camera+, ProCamera or Camera Genius, this app is good and worth a look if the features appeal to you. If you already have one, though, Camtastic really doesn’t bring anything new.
2010 was a breakthrough year for iPhoneography. It’s been an exciting year and a lot has happened.
To put it all into perspective, exactly one year ago, the iPhone 3GS was the top of the line and most of us were still shooting with the old lo-fi iPhone 2G or 3G cameras. CameraBag and ColorSplash were still many iPhonegraphers’ go-to apps. Before Iris and PhotoWizard-Editor, there were only two combatants in the photo editor app wars — Photogene and PhotoForge. Remember that Photogene was winning? Hipstamatic had just been released and was just being discovered by the iPhoneography community. And display of iPhone photography was mostly limited to Flickr and Facebook.
A lot has happened over the year. The community has grown. We are drawn together from the online world and many of use have since met in the real world. There are a lot more people taking pictures with their iPhones now and a lot more creating art. Here’s my rundown of the biggest iPhoneography news stories of 2010. If I missed any, tell us yours in the comments below.
Back in August 2010, the number one photo app at the time was Camera+, which was suddenly deleted from the App Store for 4 months because of VolumeSnap, an undocumented Easter Egg allowing users to use the volume buttons on their iPhones as a shutter release.
The feature is back in several minor apps — mostly coming from Russia and China. The latest is Quick Snap – Camera Plus by a developer called Good Code, which was released on December 15, 2009 shortly before the App Store went on its holiday break. They are pretty blatant about the feature, describing VolumeSnap in the first line of the App Store description and they even use photos of the Easter Egg. As of today, December 27, 2009, Quick Snap is still available in the App Store and is an app that I do not recommend.
UPDATED: Now includes a PDF of the original City Pages article, posted with permission.
Since its release, there has been a lot of speculation about the backstory of Hipstamatic. At one point, I was even considering taking the trip up to Merrill, Wisconsin to check it out — to put the rumors to rest.
The latest issue of City Pages, an alternative weekly newspaper in Wausau, Wisconsin, features a story about hometown hero and one of Hipstamatic’s creators Ryan Dorshorst. City Pages’ Deputy Editor Rick LaFrombois, who wrote the story, has done the legwork for all of us and dug pretty deep into the Hipstamatic backstory. What he found indicates that the Hipstamatic backstory may be “a myth.”
Camera+
Version 2.0 Price: $1.99 (on sale for a limited time for $0.99)
Bottom Line: Camera+ is one of the two best camera replacement apps available. The 2.0 update improves this great app even more. Very highly recommended.
In one of the biggest iPhoneography stories of 2010, after a 4-month hiatus because of the VolumeSnap issue, the excellent, sought after photo app Camera+ by tap tap tap is back in the App Store. Apparently a lot of users missed the app. After one day back, it’s once again the #1 photo app and the #9 paid app overall in the App Store.
With the tremendous improvements in the recent ProCamera updates, along with the frustration among the user base concerning tap tap tap’s silence on the app, the return of Camera+ really had to hit it out of the park. This update does that. Everything that was good in the previous version is the same or improved. And there’s a whole lot of better that’s been added in.

After a 4-month hiatus, the excellent, sought after photo app Camera+ by tap tap tap is back in the App Store. If you’re a previous owner of the app, this is a free update. If not, you can purchase this version 2 update for only $0.99 for a limited time.
I was provided with a beta copy before the app was rereleased. With the tremendous improvements in the recent ProCamera updates, along with the frustration among the user base concerning tap tap tap’s silence on the app, the return of Camera+ really had to hit it out of the park. This update does that.
Glyn Evans over at The iPhoneography Blogreports this morning that the authentic Camera+ by tap tap tap is returning to the App Store soon, states a new post on the tap tap tap blog.
New iPhone and iPod Touch photo app AccuSmart Camera is FREE right now in the App Store. I suspect this is a ratings grab and this introductory free promotion won’t last long, so grab now, read later.
It’s actually a pretty good, sophisticated camera, although just from testing it, I don’t think it’s worth all the five-star reviews it’s currently accruing (see ratings grab above…). Four stars tops. The interface is gooey. Yes, gooey — that’s the best way to describe it. The UI (or GUI…) is actually pretty cool and well laid out. All the controls you need are right there on one side of the screen.
The new Pro Lab and Pro Cut tools in ProCamera 3.0
ProCamera
Version 3.0 Price: $2.99
Bottom Line: Still the best camera replacement app in the store — fast, powerful, stable — but the new Studio module is great in some ways, a little disappointing in others.
No doubt about it… ProCamera by daemgen.net is still the best camera replacement app in the App Store. Not only does it have every feature I look for in a camera replacement app, daemgen invented features I didn’t even know I needed before (okay, maybe not really, but the white balance lock feature is pretty nice!)
The new ProCamera 3.0 update is available now. The already awesome camera module is improved even further in this update with new features and performance enhancements. The new, highly-touted Studio feature, while nicely featured and very well-implemented, suffers from performance issues.
