One of the earliest and one of the premier fauxlaroid apps in the App Store is misskiwi’s ClassicINSTA, part of their ClassicCAMERA series which also include the excellent ClassicTOY, ClassicPAN, and Squara apps.
The ClassicINSTA 7.0.0 update was just released. In it, the app gets a makeover and a few new features. I’ll walk you through them after the jump. >>>
The popular ClassicCAMERA apps from misskiwi are on sale now for a limited time. ClassicPAN, ClassicSAMP, and ClassicINSTA are all on sale right now for $0.99 each — a savings of $1.00 for each app.
Each of these apps feature the excellent set of authentic looking ClassicCAMERA retro analog film filters. Each app recreates a different style of toy camera. ClassicSAMP recreates several different plastic multi-shot cameras. ClassicINSTA replicates the style of analog instant photographs. And ClassicPAN is a great single-shot panorama camera app which recently got a great new SprocketRocket-like effect.
These are the siblings to the popular and highly recommended ClassicTOY app. The last time misskiwi’s ClassicCAMERA apps went on sale, it was for a very limited time and they went back to their regular price very quickly. If you’re missing any in the set, this is a great chance to grab them now before the price goes back up.
ClassicINSTA, the instant camera simulator in misskiwi’s popular Classic Camera line of photo apps, has been updated to version 5.2.
The latest version brings the total film types up to an even dozen, adding the Scarlet film which originally debuted in the last update of sibling app ClassicTOY. Images shot with Scarlet look more like they came from an old plastic camera than from an instant camera, but they still look great and I’m not one to complain about new toys to play with. Over a year ago, I wrote two stories about The Best Free iPhoneography Apps: Camera Replacements and Image Editors. Since those two stories were first posted, a lot has changed in iPhonegraphy. The iPhone is now on iOS 4.2 (soon to be iOS 4.3). Two versions of the iPhone 4 have been released and these devices have much greater resolution and a much better camera than those of a year ago. The iPod Touch 4th Generation now comes with a camera. Several of the apps originally listed are no longer available or break in the latest versions of the iOS.
Currently, many free versions of the apps are try-before-you-buy versions of their commercial siblings. Many are very feature limited or save at unusably low resolutions.
However, there are still some great free photo apps in the App Store. Some of these apps are ad-supported. Some save in usable but not full resolution. None of these apps add an obstructing watermark. All of these apps are very usable and are normally free. Apps whose price is temporarily reduced to free are not included here.
ClassicINSTA turns you iPhone into the perfect instant camera, recreating the look and experience of the classic Polaroid, Kodak and Fuji instant cameras from the 70′s and 80′s.
Hot on the heels of the recent 4.0 update, ClassicINSTA 4.1.0 has hit the App Store. This excellent fauxlaroid app gets a revamped user interface, a colorful new icon, integrated Facebook sharing and better performance in this update. The frames have been updated with added texture giving a more authentic appearance than in previous versions. And the app now also has an onscreen switch, giving the user easier access to the two additional frames added in a previous update.
Within the last few days, two of the more popular apps of the ClassicCAM line from misskiwi have received great updates. Now, all four of the ClassicCAM apps are iOS4 and iPhone 4 compatible.
Bottom Line: One of the more authentic-looking faux-Polaroid apps. Resolution isn’t the greatest, though.
There are a lot of fake Polaroid apps available. I notice subtle differences between them. Some are better than others. Some of them create square images similar to the old Kodak instant prints. Some have the textured, knurled frame. The vignette around the frame differs. Color saturation varies greatly. Instant Camera by bbcddc has been around for a while, but of the fake Polaroids or “fauxlaroids”, it comes awfully close to looking like the real thing.
July 1, 2010 — Still kind of slow with the photo app updates. There were only a few photo app updates today, although I am excited about the Lux Deluxe update that came out today (the iPhone version of the game of Risk).
The big updates of the day come from Takayuki Fukatsu, the developer of TiltShift Generator. Several of his other apps got updates for iPhone 4 today, OldCamera, SepiaCamera and the popular ToyCamera. All three have been updated for iPhone 4, including full 5MP output capability.
Updates for the Classic Camera series from misskiwi have been submitted to the App Store, but still haven’t been released yet. And we’re still waiting on the new Hipstamatic 160 update with the great new features and bug fixes. Full resolution prints on the iPhone 4 and the flash/flash feature sounds really cool! It’s still in review and hasn’t streeted yet. Really. I just checked.
One of the things that the iPhone does well (and one of the reasons, I think, that elevates iPhoneography above other mobile phone photography) is the platform’s ability to create digital images with analog and film effects — often with uncanny accuracy and sometimes even better than the film or device it mimics. Polaroid effects are among the more popular of these iPhone analog filters. There’s more, including my thoughts, after the click….
Just an apped-up diversion which started as a zoomed image from our seats near the back row of a recent Jeff Beck / Gary Hoey concert. Inspired by Spaten.
