Facebook Buys Instagram: Breaking the Instagram ties

Yesterday, we (and just about every other news source) reported that Facebook is buying the popular social photo network Instagram. Many Instagram users are concerned with the changes Facebook’s ownership will make and with the privacy concerns of sharing their photos using Facebook’s terms of service and with the possibility of Facebook using Instagram’s data for marketing purposes.

Personally, I’m not one of them. I’m not going to ditch Instagram over the Facebook buyout. I already make it easy enough for Big Brother to track me anywhere, so I feel like I might as well enjoy the tidbits I get in return. If you don’t share my view, iPhoneographer Dixon Hamby has shared with us some of his suggestions for extricating yourself from Instagram and also serves up his recommendation for an alternate social photo network.

Breaking News: Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion dollars.

Breaking News: Mega-social network Facebook has purchased mega-social photo network Instagram for $1 billion dollars in cash and stock.

It reads like an April Fool’s Day story that I might have posted a few days ago, but Mark Zuckerberg just posted the announcement on his timeline about an hour ago as of this writing.

“I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook….

“We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.”

A Gallery of Facebook iPhone Photo Contest IPC Winners

Robert Buckley, winner of the IPC January 2012, Theme: WILDLIFE

The iPhone Photography Competition (IPC) has been hosted monthly on Facebook since November 2009, making it one of the longest running iPhone photo challenges. Mike Fendt created the contest “as I’m passionate about photography and I love my iPhone!” I’m still an admin of the group as well, but Mike handles the contests and day-to-day business.

Each month brings a new themed contest. Winners are determined by votes. The only prize is bragging rights and the winner gets to choose the next month’s theme. Currently, there are over 1,500 iPhoneographers and users in the group and it’s a diverse mix.

Here’s a gallery of some of the recent monthly winners in the iPhone Photography Competition. Recent monthly winners include Robert Buckley, Hannah Louise Henney, Fiona Christian and Bashar Alaeddin, To enter this month’s contest which is “Live Music”, simply head over to the page and submit.

iPhone Photo Competition Showcase: iPhoneographer Lindsey Thompson

Shadows Walking by Lindsey Thompson

When I’m not writing for Life In LoFi or graphic designing at my day job, I also run the iPhone Photography Competition (IPC) page on Facebook. Every month, iPhoneographers submit photos based on a chosen theme. The theme for March was “Magic Hour” – sunset photos shot and apped using only an iPhone or iPod Touch. iPhoneographer Lindsey Thompson was the first runner-up with her excellent and ethereal photo, “Shadows Walking,” shown above.

I also run iPhone Photography Competition (IPC) page on Facebook. Every month, iPhoneographers submit photos based on a chosen theme. The last month’s theme was “Connections”. The winner of this competition was iPhoneographer Laura Peischl once again, this time with her stunning photograph, shown above.
