There’s about one month until eyephoneography, a high-visibility exhibition at The Hub in Madrid, Spain. This inaugural show features the works of Sion Fullana, Marco La Civita, Isabelle “MissPixels” Gagné, and Greg Schmigel.

We recently posted a link to the interview of Darren Milligan, one of the show’s selection committee. In the lead-up to the Madrid show, the eyephoneography blog has posted an interview with Sally Gutierrez Dewar, another member of the show’s selection committee. In particular, I found her views on smart phones and how they are effecting our everyday lives interesting. She also discusses her favorite images of each photographer in the exhibit — they are four excellent and visually powerful images. Sion’s is one of my favorites from his catalog and the image she selected by by Marco is powerful, stark and moving.

Other technologies have had an impact on what could be called our modes of seeing, but smartphones and social networks are radically mutating the whole sphere of visual thinking, shifting it from the individualistic gaze to communities of vision.

The entire interview is here on the eyephoneography blog.

eyephoneography #1 opens September 17, 2010 at The Hub in Madrid, Spain. Visit eyephoneography.com for more information.

This inaugural show features the works of Sion Fullana, Marco La Civita, Isabelle “MissPixels” Gagné, and Greg Schmigel.

Darren Milligan is one of the judges of the show and was recently interviewed on the eyephoneography blog. He is a designer and director of digital media projects at the Center for Education and Museum Studies at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, and he’s been creating mobile phone photography for years prior to his iPhone. He has a strong visual background and it’s very interesting to read his insights on iPhone photography, mobile phone photography, and his thoughts on several of the pieces in the Madrid exhibit.

Photography, for me, has always been deeply involved in my own process of memory-making. An image of a moment or place from my past is a tool: a key to unlock the rich replay of that experience. I became aware of the power of mobile photography several years ago when I moved to Washington and looked for a method to document my explorations of a new city and to witness the ways that city would inevitably change me.

The entire interview is here on the eyephoneography blog.

eyephoneography #1 opens September 17, 2010 at The Hub in Madrid, Spain.
After the Mobile Photography Award 2010, Berlin-based EYEEM continues their work with the launch of a new website: a hub dedicated to the mobile photography movement.

[Press Release]

After the Mobile Photography Award 2010, Berlin-based EYE’EM continues their work with the launch of a new website: a hub dedicated to the mobile photography movement. The innovative website brings mobile photographers from around the world together to establish mobile photography as a new form of art.

.
The all-new www.eyeem.com allows mobile photographers to upload, share and discuss their work in real-time. The platform aggregates images in streams of mutual inspiration and creative expression. Users can create their own photo streams, follow each other’s creative output and browse photos by topics or cities. EYE’EM is open to all platforms. Mobile apps for multiple devices will be launched soon.

EXHIBIT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS

The heart of the platform is an ongoing photography competition. The movement’s best rated photos will be exhibited in pop-up galleries around the world on a regular basis. The next show is scheduled for September 2010. All photos uploaded as of the launch will automatically qualify for the competition. EYE’EM will be publishing details regarding the upcoming exhibition soon.

EYE’EM IN PRIVATE BETA. YOU ARE INVITED.

EYE’EM has invited a selection of mobile photographers from around the world to a private beta programme. You are welcome to request invite codes at www.eyeem.com/apply.

ABOUT MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY.

Mobile photography is about impulsiveness and spontaneous creativity. It’s about the world around you and how you see it. Take a photo, express your creativity and share it with others. The global mobile photography movement has been gaining momentum for years. EYE’EM is convinced that the time has come to push forward a new form of art and is now providing the stage for it.

ABOUT EYE’EM

EYE’EM was founded in Berlin in January 2010. The founders were joined by their passion for mobile photography, creativity innovation and tasty pancakes. The EYE’EM blog (blog.eyeem.com) regularly publishes interviews with talented mobile photographers, insights into the scene and its origins and inspirations, as well as simple collages of beautiful mobile photographs. The first EYE’EM AWARD, launched in march 2010 (award.eyeem.com), received more than 3000 submissions from all over the world. The winning images were exhibited at Schlechtriem Brothers Gallery in Berlin, proving that mobile photography is ready to conquer the art world. The launch of www.eyeem.com on July 27 is the starting point of a mobile revolution in photography.

Photoshop.com Mobile is not the definitive image editing app. However, this app is a very good app that has a nice toolset that you can use to enhance your images.

Photoshop.com App

Photoshop.com Mobile
Version 1.0

Bottom Line: Recommend!

Several apps have worn the mantle “Photoshop for iPhone”, including Photogene and PhotoForge, two of my favorite image editing apps for iPhone. Now, Adobe has finally unleashed a version of Photoshop for iPhone. Photoshop.com Mobile brings several of Photoshop’s functions to the iPhone, including crop, rotate and flip, color basics, and Photoshop filters and effects. The app works as a standalone app on your iPhone, but to get the benefit of all of its features, you should use it in tandem with a Photoshop.com account.

It’s not the app you’re expecting, though. There will be Photoshop purists who will be angry and disappointed at this 1.0 release. PS Mobile is missing many of the capabilities you would expect from an app that bears the name Photoshop. It is not the definitive image editing app. However, this app is a very good app that has a nice toolset that you can use to enhance your images.

The app has basic set of color enhancement tools for Exposure, Saturation, Tint, and a basic setting to convert to Black & White. Operation of the settings is easily accomplished by dragging your finger across the screen; a number at the top of the screen gives you a value to gauge your change. You can Crop, Rotate and Flip your images. Missing are settings for Brightness & Contrast, Color Temperature, and Levels — settings found in many of the other image editing apps. The feature set of PS Mobile is not on par with the Flash-based feature set of Photoshop.com, which has the full compliment of image editing tools.

Photoshop.com Mobile effects screens

PS Mobile has several effects not found on the website, including adjustable Sketch and Soft Focus effects, as well as several one-touch effects: Vibrant (a saturation intensifier similar to a Lomo effect), Pop (a multi-colored “pop art” effect), Vignette Blur, a nice Warm Vintage effect which is somewhere between sepia and CameraBag’s Magazine effect, as well as a couple of others. I like most of the filters, especially Vibrant and Vignette Blur. the iPhone app supports multiple undos and redos. In future versions, I’d like to see more effects filters as well as some way to adjust the intensity of each filter. I’d also like to see the feature set include more of the tools available online.

The business end -- Photoshop.com's editing controls (Click here to enlarge)

You actually don’t need a Photoshop.com account to use PS Mobile. The app can access and save to your iPhone’s photo library. You only need an account to take advantage of the image sharing and additonal online image editing features. Signing up was easy and painless. You can sign up online or within the app — nice! You can also use an existing Adobe ID to sign in. The free service gives you 2GB of storage, more space than Flickr or Picasa. You can also purchase an additional 250GB or 500GB of storage if you have a lot of images and video.

The website has some very nice image sharing features. You can organize your photos into albums or into group albums for greater control with sharing and collaboration. It was fairly easy to upload and share images from a browser. PS Mobile’s built-in Save and Upload option makes saving and sharing your images to Photoshop.com seamless from your iPhone.

PS Mobile and Photoshop.com are more like components of Photoshop Elements than like Photoshop CS. Both are designed for the masses to easily tweak and share images. The iPhone app works very well in that regard. And I think that is the focus of these two components — tweaking, having a little fun, uploading and sharing your images. The iPhone app, along with the website do this very well.

Photoshop.com Mobile is not the replacement for every other photo editing app on your iPhone. It’s a good app for what it does and especially because it’s free, there’s no reason not to have this app. It’s got some great, unique filters and a clean interface.

Those who are expecting CS for iPhone will be disappointed. Adobe might have done better to brand it Photoshop Elements Mobile. For beefier image editing, those photographers should probably hold on to their copies of Photogene and PhotoForge — both apps have a good complement of heavy duty image editing tools.

Photoshop.com Mobile is a very good app that won’t replace your app arsenal, but is definitely a good addition to it.

Photoshop.com Mobile is available for free on the App Store.

=M=

FTC Disclosure: I am not associated with any camera app creator. I got this app right away for free in the App Store. My only connection with Adobe and Photoshop is having to upgrade my RAM and Mac whenever they release a new upgrade to Creative Suite.
