Noir Photo On Sale Now!

Noir Photo is the great but relatively pricey photo app that lets you convert your images into luscious, classic, cinematic black & white images. It’s a fairly simple app that can be used to create classic-looking monochromes. It’s easy to use with few controls.

In my original review, I said that “A good app to have, but not essential at this premium price.” It’s now on sale for $0.99 — that’s $2 off the normal price. This is a great price for this app and if you’ve been on the fence about this one but were put off by the $3 pricetag, this is a great chance to get the app and save a couple of bucks. No indication if this is a permanent price drop or not, so grab it now.

Noir Photo is a universal app. It’ll run great on any iOS device including iPad. Requirements say compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Noir Photo for iPhone Updated

Noir, full screen mode

I bought my copy of Noir Photo by Red Giant Software the day the app was released – no promo copy for me. To this day, I think it’s three dollars well spent. Noir Photo lets you convert your images into luscious, classic, cinematic black & white and then adjust the vignette to “light” the image or draw attention to one element of the photo. You can read my review of the previous version here.

Noir just got an update. While not a major one, it adds a couple of good, new features to the app.

MonoPhix 3.1: Now With Color Conversion Filters

Recently, several of the top monochrome conversion apps have been updated to add a feature that Photoshoppers have been using for years — color filters for black & white conversion, which is basically using that color’s channel as your grayscale source.

MonoPhix 3.1 recently hit the App Store. The update adds these features to this excellent monochrome conversion app.

Monochromia for iPhoneMonochromia from developer youthhr (the developer of Cameramatic, Phonto and other excellent iPhone photo apps) is a very good black & white conversion app for iPhone and iPad photography. It’s got some great monochrome presets, film grain and vignette tools.

Review: MonoPhix 3.0.2 for iPhone and iPod Touch

MonoPhix 3.0 (and a couple of bug-fix updates bringing it to 3.0.2) was released recently. Imagine taking an excellent iPhone app and then piling about 200% more excellent on it and that’s the latest update for MonoPhix. It’s really that good. The latest version of MonoPhix builds on the already top-notch monochrome converter by adding a bunch of great new features, creating a more unified interface with the iPad version, and doing it all without piling much overhead on the app.

Quick Tip: MonoPhix 3.0′s new hideaway tools

The new 3.0 update of MonoPhix by Phoenxsoftware was released today. I’ll have a full review soon, but imagine taking an excellent iPhone app and then piling about 200% more excellent on it and that’s this update for MonoPhix. It’s really that good.

All that greatness requires a bit of screen real estate. And not only does MonoPhix 3 have a ton of new tools, but it now has a much requested larger preview area. Another new feature of the app is the ability to easily hide the tool overlays. Click past the jump to find out how.

Version 1.0
Price $1.99

Rating 4 stars

Bottom Line: The monotones are nice across all colors at default saturation — among the nicest I’ve seen.

monotone for iphone ipadMonotone is a new from Hiraoki Sato that converts your images to tinted monotones or black & white monochrome images. It’s a universal app that works on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Initially, I was going to pass on this one. At first, the functionality and the description didn’t really grab me. The MonoPhix apps and FILM LAB do the bulk of my monochrome conversion and Live FX is an excellent app to create monotones. But, then I read Glyn Evans’ very positive iPad-focused review of Monotone on the iPhoneography blog, had a quick email exchange with him about the app, and bought it. My thoughts on the app after the jump.
