lo-mob 1.6 Update Released

lo-mob is one of iPhoneography’s earliest retro photo apps and still a classic. It has 39 vintage and experimental photographic filters — all tweakable for endless variations. Its well-rendered selection of old analog camera effects are still among the best and most accurately recreated in the App Store.

The lo-mob 1.6 update has just been released. It fixes a few bugs and adds a new filter and a few useful new features.

The Ten Best FREE iPhone Photo Apps

Best Free iPhone iPod Touch photo apps

Over a year ago, I wrote two stories about The Best Free iPhoneography Apps: Camera Replacements and Image Editors. Since those two stories were first posted, a lot has changed in iPhonegraphy. The iPhone is now on iOS 4.2 (soon to be iOS 4.3). Two versions of the iPhone 4 have been released and these devices have much greater resolution and a much better camera than those of a year ago. The iPod Touch 4th Generation now comes with a camera. Several of the apps originally listed are no longer available or break in the latest versions of the iOS.

Currently, many free versions of the apps are try-before-you-buy versions of their commercial siblings. Many are very feature limited or save at unusably low resolutions.

However, there are still some great free photo apps in the App Store. Some of these apps are ad-supported. Some save in usable but not full resolution. None of these apps add an obstructing watermark. All of these apps are very usable and are normally free. Apps whose price is temporarily reduced to free are not included here.

Film Lab
Version 1.0
Price: $0.99
FILM

Rating 4 stars

Bottom line: Great renditions of A TON of classic film stocks. An orientation bug needs to be fixed though.

Film Lab for iPhoneNot all film stocks are created equal. Photos shot with AGFA ISO 100 film looked much different than shooting with Kodak ISO 100 film. The unique formulations of the films and the different chemistries needed to process them gave each film its own unique color characteristics. For instance, the Fuji films I preferred to shoot with were cooler than many Kodak films, which tended to be warmer and more color saturated.

Film Lab is the latest photo app from CLBITZ Ubiquitous Communications, the makers of Retro Camera. Although it’s not perfect, iPhoneographers who used to shoot with film or who want to recreate the look of analog film stocks will love Film Lab.
