misskiwi’s Squara photo app is another very good square format app that integrates nicely with Instagram, but also makes a great shooter on its own. Squara is on sale now for a limited time for only $0.99 — a savings of $1.00.

I’m a huge fan of misskiwi’s line of ClassicCAMERA apps, including ClassicTOY, ClassicPAN and others. Squara is similar to these apps, but has some pretty big differences in many ways to distinguish it from the ClassicCAM line.

Squara is a multi-lens, SuperSampler-style square format app with 19 special effects, 6 adjustment effects, 12 borders and 11 light-leaks for a total of over 10,000 combination. The effects range from classic toy cameras to other analog effects to a really cool oversaturated printed halftone effect. I think it’s a slightly broader range of effects than are found in the rest of the Classic series. The effects have the color, textural and tonal quality found in misskiwi’s other apps. I like the consistency and the quality of misskiwi’s effects across the entire line of apps.

Squara lets you shoot in-app or import single images from your camera roll. The app has several lens options from single, to multi-lens to double exposure. It has vignetting and tilt-shift tools. If all of this is a little overwhelming, there’s always the Random button to generate a full set of effects to an image. Check out the App Store description for all of the app’s features. There are a lot.

Squara has built-in Send To Instagram support as well as Apple’s “Open In…” support. You can import your photo directly into a number of other photo apps to continue processing, including FX Photo Studio, Filterstorm, Camera+, PicFX and a bunch more.

The app creates great-looking effects. Where Squara differs from the ClassicCAMERA line is in the naming convention of the filters. Here, the filters are named loosely after cameras in many cases, not the Classic film names I expected from a misskiwi app. I suspect it’s because there’s so much more being applied here than just film effects. Also, on my iPhone 4S, Squara outputs a single frame image at a usable 1440×1440 pixels. Multi-frame images are saved at the full square resolution of the 4S — 2448×2448.

If you’re not already maxed out on square-format apps, Squara is another good addition to your toolbox, especially for the multi-lens options. Grab it now while it’s on sale.

The excellent camera module is the heart of ProCamera. The app helps improve the quality of the shot in camera, and has easy to use separate focus and exposure lock, white balance lock, and anti-shake stabilization. It has all of the things to look for in a good camera replacement app.

The studio and effects modules put the app on par with other all-in-one camera apps. You can read my review of the ProCamera version 3.0 update here. I recently helped to update and edit ProCamera’s Online Help and Tips & Tricks. It’s an excellent photo app for getting the best shot in camera and it’s my go-to camera replacement app.

ProCamera works on any iPhone or iPod Touch 4th Gen running iOS 4.0 or newer. The latest version of the iOS is needed to take advantage of some of the app’s advanced features.

It gets you back to HDR shooting in seconds, rather than minutes.  |

Multi-lens Camera provides multiple display screens simultaneously when you are taking pictures, and then combines multiple photos into one photo after shooting. I’ve been playing around with Live Filter Camera for several versions now and watching it improve. Most of its retro effects are well done and they render live onscreen as you shoot. Photogene2

This powerful image editor for iPhone is on sale now for a limited time for only $0.99. That’s a savings of $1.00 off the regular price.

Current App Store ratings are averaging an impressive 4-1/2 stars for Photogene2 and after using it for a few weeks, I think those ratings are accurate and deserved.

Where the original Photogene was showing its age, this new version is fast, full featured, and has a great, newly revised interface. If you are currently using an all-in-one camera app (such as Camera+ or King Camera) or are otherwise not using one of the high-end iOS image editors, this is a great addition to your iPhoneography camera bag. Grab it now while the price is low.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later. It’ll run on an iPad, but this version is not a Universal app and doesn’t fully take advantage of the larger screen real estate of the iPad.

FiLMiC Pro is billed as “THE Filmmaker’s App.” It adds features specifically for videographers which improve the video production experience on the iPhone. FiLMiC Pro is a full-featured video camera designed with the videographer in mind. There’s everything you could want in here to shoot some pretty serious raw video. It’s got separate focus and exposure targets, white balance lock, a user-switchable rule of thirds grid. It’s a pretty spiffy video app. You can read my review here. I liked it a lot and it’s still averaging over four stars in the App Store user reviews.

FiLMiC Pro is on sale now for only $0.99 – that’s $2.00 off the regular price. This is a limited time sale for this outstanding full-featured, video camera app. It’s not on sale for this price often. This is a great chance to grab it if you’ve missed previous sales.

We recently reviewed CamCam. It’s got great looking retro filters and a cool live preview. While it’s a fun diversion, I wrote “For some, it might not be worth the three dollars.” It’s now on sale for $0.99 through September 25 — that’s $2.00 off it’s normal price. While still not for everyone, for a dollar, it becomes a much more attractive app purchase. |

Lightweight photo editor PicTools is on sale for $0.99 — down from its normal $1.99 price. PicTools is another lightweight but very useful photo editor. It’s not as full featured as Filterstorm or either of the PhotoForge apps. It’s more like PhotoToaster — an app that has pretty much everything you’ll need for most everyday on-the-fly image tweaks. Plus, the app has a nice selection of filter preset effects, too. It’s on sale for a limited time. |

100 Cameras in 1, photographer Trey Ratcliff’s square format filter app that lets you stack one or more textures is on sale now for $0.99 (usual price $1.99). Many of the textures are varying degrees and flavors of grunge, but there are also some color shifts and more. It’s a nice companion to toy camera apps that focus more on simulating various lens and film effects. You can read our review of the update to version 3.0 here. I’m not sure how excited I am about this sale, as 100 Cameras has been reduced to free a couple of times this summer. However, $0.99 is still a savings and isn’t a bad price for this popular photo app. |

Camera-replacement app Camera Genius is on sale now for only $0.99 — a savings of $1.00 off the regular price. Camera Genius is the original camera replacement app for iPhone — one of the first in the App Store to add more advanced features to the iPhone’s camera, such as digital zoom (in those pre-iOS 4 days), anti-shake stabilization, and composition grid lines. It’s grown and is now a fast, all-in-one camera app with a powerful toolset, including all six of my criteria for a good camera replacement app. |

Also, photo editor PhotoToaster has just been updated to version 2.0 and is still on sale through tomorrow for only $0.99. |

I gave it a median three stars in my review – not bad, not excellent, but good. BeFunky Pro has some good filters that are pretty cool, like the great pinhole filter. Yes, you read that correctly – I wrote grab it now. Click past the jump to find out why.

TTV photography (TtV) is shooting ‚”through the viewfinder‚” of an old camera, often a single lens reflex (SLR) or twin lens reflex (TLR), using using another camera to create interesting framing effects. TTV images have the signature black edges from the viewfinder. They often have composition gridlines. Sometimes, they pick up dust and other anomalies from the prism. And color is not accurate, often washing out just a little bit for a slightly surreal cool hue and saturation. It’s a pretty cool effect and a few apps recreate this on the iPhone very well.

Back in March, 2011, Taplayer introduced their through-the-viewfinder app, TtV Camera. The app had several issues. What worked about the app was great. I wanted to like it, but there was too much that needed fixing for me to give it a good rating.

TtV Studio Pro is a similar, but different (and much better) app than TtV Camera. Everything I didn’t like about the previous app has been fixed in this new, updated app.

It’s a very good app that applies a number of authentic-looking through the viewfinder effects to your photos. It has great looking effects with dust, grain, color shifts, gridlines, frames and imperfections. They’re very similar to the gorgeous effects of their low-res TtV Camera app, except now in high resolution.

It’s a pretty impressive set of old viewfinder recreations, too, including – Kodak Duaflex, Argus 75, Brownie (I shot with my mom’s old Brownie when I was a kid!), Bronica SQAi, Super Ricohflex, Rolleiflex, and many others including a bunch you may not recognize. All the presets are labeled which helps when trying to find your faves.

It supports full iPhone 4 resolution. You can load images from your photo library. It’s not a fast shooter, but there are few photo apps that do through-the-viewfinder this well.

TtV Studio Pro also has a built-in toolset good for making basic color moves and putting some final tweaks on an image.

The app is background-operation “tolerant”. I didn’t test it to see if it processes in the background. It previews fairly fast so I didn’t really see the need. But, if you exit the app – not quit – for any reason, you return to where you left off in your processing. I like apps that do that.

It’s a square format only app. My only complaint is that it centers the crop. It loads the image with the ends cut off and there’s no way to move, pinch and zoom. This is not a huge complaint for me. It just means an extra step in a cropping app. The highly recommended Squaready is perfect for this.

I’m pleasantly surprised that TtV Studio Pro is as nice an app as it is. I recommend it for grungy, retro, through-the-viewfinder effects. And at a dollar off, it’s a steal.
