UPDATE #1: The deadline for submissions for this competition has been extended to Tuesday, November 30, 2010. =M=

UPDATE #2: Somehow, this classic post from 2010 is getting a lot of hits. This event has long passed, but be sure to check out current calls for entries, exhibitions, workshops and more on Life In LoFi’s Events Calendar.

Project Basho is pleased to announce ONWARD ‘11, an annual juried photography competition exclusively featuring the work of emerging photographers. ONWARD focuses on new work that continues to push the medium. With ONWARD, photographers have the opportunity to present their vision and talent to a broad audience.

This is not an iPhoneography competition, but a fairly prestigious photography competition which accepts photography from all cameras, including iPhones. Submission deadline is this Friday, November 19, 2010.

I contacted ONWARD specifically about the use of iPhone cameras.

“There are no camera restrictions for ONWARD. The theme and medium are open,” says Jacob Pastrovich, the ONWARD Coordinator. “I agree that photos taken with the iPhone can be of good quality, and if the juror, Larry Fink deems the photos good enough, he is the one who decides if they go into the show or not. I think mobile phone photography is a great exploration of the medium.”

The entry fee is pricey at $40 for the first three images, but there are some great potential rewards, including gallery exhibition and publication in art and photo magazines for the winners. There’s also some great prizes from LensBaby and other sponsors.

I see great iPhoneography on a daily basis and the next logical step is to take the excellent photography being created with iPhones up to the next level to non-mobile photography exhibitions.

Submission deadline has been extended to Tuesday, November 30, 2010. The exhibition opens February 10, 2011 at the Project Basho Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.

Here’s the entire press release for ONWARD ’11

Project Basho is pleased to announce ONWARD ‘11, an annual juried photography competition exclusively featuring the work of emerging photographers. ONWARD focuses on new work that continues to push the medium. With ONWARD, photographers have the opportunity to present their vision and talent to a broad audience. Through our partnerships with other photography organizations, photographers will have the chance to foster and grow a vibrant and rich photography community. There is no specific theme for ONWARD and submissions are open to any photographic medium from historical processes to new digital technologies.

We are pleased to have Larry Fink as the ONWARD ‘11 juror. He is a very prolific fine art, commercial and documentary photographer and educator with a career that spans over 40 years. Mr. Fink’s work has been the subject of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of Modern Art; the San Francisco Museum of Art; the Musee de la Lausanne Photographie in Belgium; and the Musee de l’Elysee in Switzerland. He has also been awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships in 1976 and 1979. Mr. Fink is best known for “Social Graces”, his work that sheds light on the dichotomy between the New York elite and a working-class America. For more information about his work, please visit the ‘This Year’s Juror’ section.

Photographs selected by Mr. Fink will be featured in a group exhibition at the Project Basho Gallery in February and March 2011, which has seen hundreds of visitors each year, as well as in the ONWARD online gallery. For the two winners, special recognition will be awarded in the form a two-person show at the Project Basho Gallery. In addition, both winners will receive special gifts courtesy of Lensbaby and FotoVisura. A selection of artists will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work through several of our media sponsors including Fraction Magazine, PhotoArts, Visura, Flak Photo, and SeeSaw Magazine.

This is a particularly exciting year for ONWARD as the exhibition continues to expand. While our partnership with an ever-growing and excellent group of media and corporate sponsors helps us to further our reach and visibility, we are also expanding on other fronts. ONWARD ‘10 attracted 418 applicants and a record number of those came to us internationally. In order to build upon that international success and to further our global reach, ONWARD ‘11 is the first year that we are translating our submission guidelines into another language—Japanese. This will allow for even more interaction and dialogue between a growing international photography community.

We are very excited about ONWARD ‘11 and look forward to seeing all of the captivating work that comes in. For submission guidelines, please see our guidelines page.
