Over the past few years shooting with the iPhone and ProCamera one of the most common questions I get asked is how can I make my photos sharper? There are a few things that you can do to improve the clarity and sharpness of your iPhone photos. Here are five tips that I use on a daily basis when shooting.

Submitted by on December 28, 2010 – 3:41 pm 11 Comments

Hipstamatic for iPhone, iPhoneographyOne of the many updates we can expect when the App Store returns from the holiday vacation is a new Hipstamatic update. Hot on the heels of the Hipstamatic 185 update, Synthetic are releasing the 190 update which includes a new feature, a new film, and various bug fixes.

Click past the jump to find out what we get with the new Hipstamatic 190. >>>

NEW FEATURES

  • New free Cherry Shine flash
  • New Claunch 72 Monochrome film, added to The Portland HipstaPak
  • You can now tap-and-hold to copy images to the clipboard

BUG FIXES / PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS

  • Improved performance when switching rapidly through lenses/flashes/films
  • Fixed small memory leaks, and fixed memory issues that could sometimes cause crashes while processing
  • Additional fix to in-app purchases to prevent continuous display of the iTunes authorization prompt

.

The Claunch 72 Monochrome film is the same film that was supposed to be given away free when Hipstamatic’s Facebook page hit 35,000 fans. Instead, it’s now added to the old Portland HipstaPak which also includes the BlacKeys Monochrome film and the Lucifer VI lens. The Claunch 72 Monochrome film is the film that was originally designed to complement the new Melodie lens in the Levi’s GoodPak, which is available for a limited time for another week or so in the Hipstamart.

So the Claunch 72 Monochrome film will be free for those of us who already have purchased the Portland HipstaPak? That is a good compromise :)

I admire Synthetic's determination to keep evolving this app in ways that make it more useful, without breaking the "plastic camera" metaphor. One thing I've noticed lately in App Store comments and on the Synthetic support forum is a steady drumbeat of users requesting features that would make Hipstamatic more like all the other faux-analog apps it has inspired — things like the ability to import photos from the camera roll, try out different effects on a photo after it's been taken, etc. Nice ideas, maybe, if you take a narrow view of the situation. But taken together, these changes would destroy the illusion that the Hipstamtic 190 is an actual camera, a direct descendent of the beloved (though mythical) Hipstamatic 100.

I do hope they've fixed the bug that causes users to be asked for their iTunes passwords over and over, and the one that causes problems installing the two new Goodpaks. Only a minority of users (like me) have experienced those issues — and I was eventually able to solve the problem by an endless round of reboots and clean installation — but they pretty much kill the Hipsta joy for anyone affected. The company declared them solved as of the 185 update, but it's clear from the support forum that they are not, at least not for everybody.

I look forward to the new film and flash. Melodie was a winner, in my opinion.

I rarely use the B&W films – how will this new one be different from the BlackKeys line?

  • Suzé

Richard, I think the point that people are making about Hipsta loading from the camera roll, is that it takes quite a while for hipsta to process. It's ridiculous. If you were using a Holga, Diana, Lomo, or any other toy camera, you take the photo, roll the film then take another shot. Hipsta does not allow for multiple or fast shooting. That can be a good thing, don't get me wrong but when you take a shot and the film or lens makes people green because you had the film/lens combo set for another shot, it would be nice if you could correct it from the camera roll instead of losing that photo forever. Imo.

I would love a b&w film with a decent border.

The new 'Claunch 72' is a nice addition… very simple black edge and a nice grayscale tone.

Suzé, I don't think it actually takes the hardware that long to process but Hipstamatic makes you wait intentionally. Yes, with a film camera you could advance the roll and take another shot faster than you can with Hipstamatic but you'd still be a long way from seeing the photo. You'd have to develop the negative and make a print. Since Hipstamatic refers to the images as "prints" I think the wait time is supposed to stand in for developing not just advancing the roll of film. The whole goal is to force you to be more intentional about how you use the camera and sometimes to accept happy accidents.

I don't get the lack of post-processing, at the end of the day this is not a Lomo-style hardware camera, so why should I have to deal with hardware limitations that don't exist?

Hey there, Marty. Happy New Year! I've not seen this update come up in iTunes yet. Do you know if this is a slow roll out kind of thing or is there some hold up? -Keith

    Hey, Keith,

The 190 update is already in beta. I was under the impression it's been submitted, but Synthetic may have pulled it for further tweaks. I was expecting to see it before the Christmas break, actually.

I'm not sure how this film will differ from BlacKeys, but I suspect that the combination of the Claunch 72 and the Melodie lens will have a lot of the qualities of Melodie Daniels' photography. Hopefully we'll find out soon.

Well I'm sure it will come out soon. I would rather have them work out the bugs instead of it crashing on me all the time. I wasn't impressed with the Melodie Lens & Levi Pak. It felt like they wanted to make a quick buck in my opinion. I;m hoping the new Claunch 72 Film will make up for that Levi Pak.
