Cameramatic 1.2.4, Dirty effect

If you like shooting square frame, but you’re looking for an alternative to Hipstamatic, definitely check out Cameramatic by youthhr. It’s an excellent analog, retro, square frame format photo app with a ton of film, frame, and other analog effects, all easily interchangeable. Don’t like any of the effects presets? Cameramatic has a built-in effects editor that allows you to create your own. Cameramatic also lets you import images from your photo library — a feature that many Hipstamatic users have been wanting since its introduction.

The new 1.2.4 update has just been released. Getting under the hood to test it reminded me just why I love this photo app so much.

The new update adds four new film effects to the already excellent standard collection — Expired Film is a flat, dark recreation of film that’s past its expiration date. It looks great with any of Cameratic’s many built-in light leaks. Dirty is a greenish, gritty gurunge overlay. Infrated Red looks like an old bleached print that’s had some red color shift. Green D Street is a desaturated look with a green color shift.

There’s also one new frame in this update, White 06 that’s a rough-edged frame with damage and scuffs on the print area.

Cameramatic now also supports yfrog as an image repository for Twitter updates.

The developer has been adding more great films and frames to cameramatic every month or so. Cameramatic is one of the best, most versatile square-frame shooters available. It’s an excellent alternative if you’re looking for an app with great analog effects but more control than Hipstamatic offers.

Cameramatic is available for $1.99 in the App Store. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
