New iPhone and iPod Touch photo app AccuSmart Camera is FREE right now in the App Store. I suspect this is a ratings grab and this introductory free promotion won’t last long, so grab now, read later.

It’s actually a pretty good, sophisticated camera, although just from testing it, I don’t think it’s worth all the five-star reviews it’s currently accruing (see ratings grab above…). Four stars tops. The interface is gooey. Yes, gooey — that’s the best way to describe it. The UI (or GUI…) is actually pretty cool and well laid out. All the controls you need are right there on one side of the screen.

The app has anti-shake and composition grid lines — both can be easily turned off. It’s got four shooting modes like many point and shoot cameras. They help compensate for different lighting conditions, such as night time, portraits, and food photography.

It has 4 aspect ratios: 4:3, 3:2, 1:1 square frame and 16:9.

I found the app to be a little slow by camera standards. Although it caches your images in the background, it still takes a few seconds to reload before you’re ready to take another shot. It takes advantage of iOS 4’s multitasking and background operation, so if you exit the app before it’s finished saving, you shouldn’t lose any images.

If this were a full-blown review, I’d say 3-1/2 stars for the camera and functionality. The slow reload time takes it down a little for me — I’d like to see that improved in future versions. Five stars for the interface. Maybe that’s what all those ratings are for in the App Store….

Best to grab it now while it’s free. No word yet on pricing when it goes off special. If you get it, please rate it in the App Store.

AccuSmart Camera works on any iPhone or iPod Touch 4th Gen running iOS 4.1 or newer.
