Monochromia from developer youthhr (the developer of Cameramatic, Phonto and other excellent iPhone photo apps) is a very good black & white conversion app for iPhone and iPad photography. It’s got some great monochrome presets, film grain and vignette tools.
Monochromia 1.5.0 has just been released. Monochromia is a superior black & white and monochrome conversion app and this update, while fairly light, still adds a couple of great new features to its toolset.
In addition to the standard convert to normal grayscale, Monochromia now has a set of color filters you can use to convert from color to black and white. This advanced feature is similar to Photoshop CS’ advanced “Convert to Black & White” tool that does more than just convert to grayscale.
Most black and white conversions on the iPhone are done by simply converting color pixel into their closest gray equivalents. While this often creates acceptable results, sometimes the resulting black and white photo is flat and loses some of its pop. By using different colored filters to minimize specific colors such as the ones now found in Monochromia, you can achieve much more dramatic black & white conversions, such as more realistic skintones, deeper reds, richer skies, and better contrast.
This update also adds a reset button in the processing window that resets the window to default values.
Monochromia is $1.99 in the App Store. Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.
