… and it’s on sale now for half off for the July 4th holiday!
The new Hipstamatic 255 update has just hit the App Store. It’s a pretty nice update, too, with plenty of new features including Volume Shutter, a new standard lens and a new standard film. Hipstamatic also just dinged me for another $0.99 — this update comes with the new Portrait SnapPak, featuring the Foxy Lens and the Sugar Film. If you’ve been waiting for new Hipstamatic gear, this update delivers in droves.
I like the new Jane lens with its desaturated effect and quite a bit of sepia. It’s a nice lens, as the amount of sepia is fairly subtle and doesn’t make the image look ancient. The new Ina’s 82 film is a good-looking, fairly straightforward textured border that doesn’t seem to otherwise effect the image.
The new Foxy lens helps improve skintones by adding overall warmth — just a touch of yellow and red — to the image. The new Sugar film adds a simple, thin, soft focus black edge to the image. It also does not otherwise effect the image. The new Portrait SnapPak is definitely good for helping portraits. It’ll also give you fairly unprocessed images while compensating for the overall blues and coolness of the iPhone’s camera. Playing around with various films, the Foxy lens could be interesting. If you were expecting a new super retro lens a la John S or Helga Viking, this isn’t it.
Dual-Landscape Mode and Volume Shutter in Hipstamatic 255
Also, with this update, Hipstamatic now shoots in either landscape position. While this doesn’t make the app left-handed, at least it lets you put the iPhone’s Home button on the left side, if you want.
UPDATE 01: As reader Demétrius Daffara pointed out in the comments below, one of the new features of the 255 (and it’s undocumented) is that Hipstamatic now has Volume Shutter. You can now use the Volume + blutton on the iPhone to snap a photo in Hipstamatic, making the new dual landscape mode that much cooler!
