Slow Shutter Cam is FREE right now for a very limited time

One of the features that the iPhone camera is missing is the ability to control exposure time. Although there are now several other apps that “trick” the iPhone’s sometimes cranky camera into giving you some control over shutter speed, Slow Shutter Cam by Cogitap is a great app that adds the ability to take long-exposure photos, similar to using the bulb or long exposure function on a film camera. You can use it to create interesting motion effects in-camera, create low-noise low light photographs, and create cool light trail photos that you can only do by leaving the shutter open for a long time. It does all this and saves at full-resolution.

It takes some time and experimentation to learn how to get the best results from all of Slow Shutter Cam’s features, but it’s worth it. With the right gear, the right settings and a tripod, you can do things with Slow Shutter Cam that few other apps can do.

Slow Shutter Cam is FREE for the next few hours in the App Store — a 24 hour reduction that started last night. That’s a discount of $1.99. Although it’s been discounted several times, this is the first time in well over a year that this app has been free. This discount will go away fairly quickly, so grab this one now if you don’t already have it.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation) and iPad Wi-Fi + 4G. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Facebook Buys Instagram: Breaking the Instagram ties

Yesterday, we (and just about every other news source) reported that Facebook is buying the popular social photo network Instagram. Many Instagram users are concerned with the changes Facebook’s ownership will make and with the privacy concerns of sharing their photos using Facebook’s terms of service and with the possibility of Facebook using Instagram’s data for marketing purposes.

Personally, I’m not one of them. I’m not going to ditch Instagram over the Facebook buyout. I already make it easy enough for Big Brother to track me anywhere, so I feel like I might as well enjoy the tidbits I get in return. If you don’t share my view, iPhoneographer Dixon Hamby has shared with us some of his suggestions for extricating yourself from Instagram and also serves up his recommendation for an alternate social photo network.

Breaking News: Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion dollars.

Breaking News: Mega-social network Facebook has purchased mega-social photo network Instagram for $1 billion dollars in cash and stock.

It reads like an April Fool’s Day story that I might have posted a few days ago, but Mark Zuckerberg just posted the announcement on his timeline about an hour ago as of this writing.

“I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook….

“We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.”

spring

Happy Monday, everyone. Except to post some personal photos of our Texas Bluebonnets road trip, I stayed away from the internet on Sunday, April 1st. This year, there just seemed to be way too much April Foolery for me. However, I have to give big credit to Whole Foods whose April Fool’s suggestion was to change the “five second rule” to the “seven second rule.” I think that should be made official. I’m completely on board with that one.

No joke — here is this week’s selection of outstanding iPhone photography, the Faved On Flickr iPhone photography showcase for April 2, 2012. These are just a small number of the outstanding images submitted to LoFi’s Flickr group in the past week. Click past the jump for the rest of this week’s showcase. >>>
