VolumeSnap to Go Away – Again?

This has the potential to get ugly and hack a lot of people off — users and developers.

Since the release of iOS 5 and the addition of the Volume Button Shutter in Apple’s Camera, many third party developers have followed suit and implemented the feature in their own apps. Jeff McMorris from CodeGoo, creators of Camera Genius Camera Genius - CodeGoo tells Life In LoFi that Apple has approved these apps “by mistake.”

Win a FREE Copy of Camera Genius Today!

Camera Genius is the original camera replacement app for iPhone — one of the first in the App Store to add more advanced features to the iPhone’s camera, such as digital zoom (in those pre-iOS 4 days), anti-shake stabilization, and composition grid lines. It’s grown and is now a fast, all-in-one camera app with a powerful toolset, including all six of my criteria for a good camera replacement app. While retaining and improving all of the original functionality that made it an early favorite for iPhoneographers, CodeGoo have recently added a ton of features over the last several updates. It’s a solid, full-featured camera replacement app. You can read more about the recent versions in my review of the recent version 3.4.

Recent Camera Genius Updates Add Improvements and Features

.
Camera Genius 3.4 was just released. In addition to bug fixes, the new feature is an improved focus and exposure system with a new design and controls to make using focus and exposure separately easier.

Recent Camera Genius updates have made it a much better iPhone photo app, but not perfect. Since I last looked at Camera Genius, it’s gotten several updates that have really improved the stability and the functionality of the app. With all the improvements in recent updates, it deserves another look.

Camera Genius gets a HUGE update

.

It’s hard to believe that just 18 months ago, Camera Genius by CodeGoo was the bees knees of camera replacement apps. It greatly improved the standard Apple Camera app by adding anti-shake stabilization, a rule-of-thirds composition grid and a (not great) digital zoom. It was fairly fast and lightweight for the time. It’s had mostly minor updates since then and had been surpassed in features, speed and functionality by both Camera+ and ProCamera as many iPhoneographer’s shooter of choice.

They’ve completely rebuilt the app in this update and gone the all-in-one route. The new Camera Genius 3.0 update ( Camera Genius - CodeGoo ) is a huge improvement over previous versions of the app. While the app retains all of its original functionality, CodeGoo have added a ton of features to Camera Genius. While the new features are impressive on the surface, the new Edit Mode has some big problems.

iPhone 4 Photo App Compatibility [UPDATED]

iPhone 4Updated: 01.07.11

The new iPhone 4 brings a better, 5MP camera to iPhoneography. How do your favorite iPhone photo apps work with the new hardware and the new iOS 4? I found that many of them work surprisingly well on the iPhone 4.

Some apps have already been updated to take advantage of the auto-focus camera introduced with the iPhone 3GS and many apps have recently been updated for iOS 4 compatibility.

Life In LoFi has created this searchable chart which lists how many of the popular photo apps (and even a few obscure ones) work with the new iPhone 4 and the new OS. The table also lists the maximum output resolutions and if there are any other known issues with the app. This isn’t necessarily an indication of how the apps will perform in iOS 4 on an older device, but how they perform on the iPhone 4.

See how your favorites fared below, after the jump.

Possible “Shutter Bug” with iPhone 4 and and some camera apps? [UPDATED]

iphone 4 bug black screen

The iPhone 4 Black Screen bug, shown in Camera+

.

I love my new iPhone 4. The device itself is fast and solid. Upgrading from my old 2G was amazingly easy and nearly all of my apps play nice with the new phone. However, I’ve been experiencing an issue when using some non-Apple camera apps on the iPhone 4. The screen locks up on the black closed shutter if the app uses the built-in flash. See the above image for the “Shutter Bug”.

Review: Camera Genius 2.0 Update – Now With Video

Camera Genius
Version 2.0

Rating 3 1/2 stars

Bottom Line: Once the best camera replacement app available, others have now surpassed it in features. Still a very good camera.

Camera Genius

Camera Genius by CodeGoo hit version 2.0 this week. Overall, Camera Genius has been a solid app for me, this update included. The version 2.0 update adds video for iPhone 2G and 3G. Unfortunately, I think Camera Genius has been leapfrogged by ProCamera and Camera Plus Pro in terms of functionality, features, power and usability. It’s still a very good app and it does many things well. If it’s your camera app of choice, you’ll be pleased with this update. But despite its features, it now lags behind other camera apps currently available.

What I think of Camera Genius’ big new feature, video for all iPhones, is below. Read on.
