New iPhone? Best iPhone Photo Starter Apps

iPhone 4S

So, you got new iPhone for Christmas…. You’ve already downloaded Angry Birds and have asked all of the “Siri-ous” questions (my personal favorite is “Open the pod bay doors, please, Siri.”)

Your new iPhone comes with a pretty serious camera and with the small investment of a few inexpensive photo apps, you can take and share some really cool photos.

But navigating the App Store can be intimidating without a little help. Here’s Life In LoFi’s guide to the best starter photo apps.

If you have a friend or family member who recently got a new iPhone, this is a great list to share with them. There’s a quick and easy email button at the end of this post. >>>

Volume Snap: Back For Some. Gone For Others.

Camera+: The New 2.2.1 Update is Out and On Sale Now!

tap tap tap’s Camera+ is often the top-selling photo app for a reason. It’s a powerful, full-featured, all-in-one camera replacement app and tap tap tap always seem to add cool new features that we didn’t even know we needed… always raising the bar for camera replacement apps.

The new 2.2.1 update is out now. While mostly a bux fix and performance tweak update, they still managed to add a cool new feature that none of the other major camera apps have. You can now share your photos by text message — SMS — from within the app.

Camera Plus Pro Announces “Metamorphosis” iPhoneography Contest

Camera Plus ProGlobal Delight’s new Camera Plus Pro update is out. This is not Camera+ by tap tap tap, but what is actually the first Camera Plus app that predated tap tap tap’s by a few months.

The 3.4 update is in the App Store and has a ton of new filters and features. It’s a pretty significant update for this camera replacement that some iPhoneographers swear by over ProCamera or Camera+. It’s pretty good. It’s a very powerful and featured all-in-one photo app, but it still has a few things that I don’t like about it. I’ll have more on the Camera Plus Pro update later, but wanted to share the info about “Metamorphosis,” the iPhone photography contest they have launched to celebrate the new release.

Camera+ 2.2 Update: Improved Auto-Focus and “Clarity”

Camera+ 2.2, Clarity scene

One of the things I love about the excellent camera replacement app Camera+ is that the development team at tap tap tap are always improving the app and the user experience. It seems that nearly every update of the app has a Wow! feature that we didn’t even know we wanted.

The new 2.2 update is scheduled to street today, Tuesday, March 29 and it is no exception.

The Ten Best FREE iPhone Photo Apps

Best Free iPhone iPod Touch photo apps

Over a year ago, I wrote two stories about The Best Free iPhoneography Apps: Camera Replacements and Image Editors. Since those two stories were first posted, a lot has changed in iPhonegraphy. The iPhone is now on iOS 4.2 (soon to be iOS 4.3). Two versions of the iPhone 4 have been released and these devices have much greater resolution and a much better camera than those of a year ago. The iPod Touch 4th Generation now comes with a camera. Several of the apps originally listed are no longer available or break in the latest versions of the iOS.

Currently, many free versions of the apps are try-before-you-buy versions of their commercial siblings. Many are very feature limited or save at unusably low resolutions.

However, there are still some great free photo apps in the App Store. Some of these apps are ad-supported. Some save in usable but not full resolution. None of these apps add an obstructing watermark. All of these apps are very usable and are normally free. Apps whose price is temporarily reduced to free are not included here.

VolumeSnap still available… in other apps like this one

Back in August 2010, the number one photo app at the time was Camera+, which was suddenly deleted from the App Store for 4 months because of VolumeSnap, an undocumented Easter Egg allowing users to use the volume buttons on their iPhones as a shutter release.

The feature is back in several minor apps — mostly coming from Russia and China. The latest is Quick Snap – Camera Plus by a developer called Good Code, which was released on December 15, 2009 shortly before the App Store went on its holiday break. They are pretty blatant about the feature, describing VolumeSnap in the first line of the App Store description and they even use photos of the Easter Egg. As of today, December 27, 2009, Quick Snap is still available in the App Store and is an app that I do not recommend.

Camera+ is now back in the App Store!

Camera+ - tap tap tap

After a 4-month hiatus, the excellent, sought after photo app Camera+ by tap tap tap is back in the App Store. If you’re a previous owner of the app, this is a free update. If not, you can purchase this version 2 update for only $0.99 for a limited time.

I was provided with a beta copy before the app was rereleased. With the tremendous improvements in the recent ProCamera updates, along with the frustration among the user base concerning tap tap tap’s silence on the app, the return of Camera+ really had to hit it out of the park. This update does that.

iPhone App Review: ProCamera 3.0

ProCamera iPhone iPod Touch

The new Pro Lab and Pro Cut tools in ProCamera 3.0

ProCamera
Version 3.0
Price: $2.99
ProCamera - daemgen.net

Rating 4 stars

Bottom Line: Still the best camera replacement app in the store — fast, powerful, stable — but the new Studio module is great in some ways, a little disappointing in others.

No doubt about it… ProCamera by daemgen.net is still the best camera replacement app in the App Store. Not only does it have every feature I look for in a camera replacement app, daemgen invented features I didn’t even know I needed before (okay, maybe not really, but the white balance lock feature is pretty nice!)

The new ProCamera 3.0 update is available now. The already awesome camera module is improved even further in this update with new features and performance enhancements. The new, highly-touted Studio feature, while nicely featured and very well-implemented, suffers from performance issues.
