Hey, Dallas/Fort Worth! Upgrading to an iPhone 4S? Read This First.

In getting an iPhone 4S, I was first informed that didn’t qualify for an early upgrade. I could have gotten the $549 32GB iPhone 4 delivered to me around November 30. That’s way too long for me to wait for the device. I’ve spent the past few days fighting with AT&T’s customer service over the phone. While everyone was nice, it was fruitless although I did learn a lot. See my post on upgrading to the iPhone 4S here.

This is a plug for Terence Peden and the great team at the AT&T Mobility Store in Arlington, Texas. When AT&T’s Phone Customer Service wasn’t able to help me upgrade without buying the new 4S outright, Terence and the crew at the North Arlington Store helped me out and got me the iPhone 4S for the discounted rate (and, of course, a new 2-year contract).

FortWorthography: The iPhone Photography of Kevin Buchanan

iPhoneography by Kevin Buchanan

I live and work in Fort Worth, Texas. For those who don’t know, Fort Worth is 30 miles west and worlds apart from our more famous neighbor to the east, Dallas. I have lived here for 30 years and I truly believe that Fort Worth is the quiet gem of North Texas. Seriously, if Chuck Norris would have picked Fort Worth instead of Dallas for “Walker, Texas Ranger”, y’all would be sayin’ Fort Worth/Dallas like some of us prefer to say here in Tarrant County.

Fort Worth is a very cool, very cultured city and takes any opportunity to inundate you with art and beer — whenever possible at the same time. This weekend, the Near Southside neighborhood threw another one of these artistic block parties called the Spring Arts Goggle. There on Magnolia Avenue, blogger and iPhoneographer Kevin Buchanan displayed the first brick and mortar exhibit of iPhoneography prints in Fort Worth, Texas.

iPhone 4 Day: Long lines persist at Fort Worth Apple Store

Fort Worth University Park Apple Store 90 minutes before close

Line at Fort Worth/University Park Apple Store 90 minutes before close

.

6:30 PM Central time. 90 minutes before store close, there are still long lines at the Fort Worth University Park Apple Store. Even with over 30 cashiers working, wait times are estimated at 3-4 hours just to get into the store. Wait times in other stores around the country are anywhere between 1-4 hours at this time — in some areas even longer.

iPhone cases are sold out here and the Fort Worth store is no longer accepting walk-ups. Fort Worth is a medium sized market — about 1.5 million people — and I suspect this scenario is similar to other markets and Apple Stores of this size.

If you reserved your iPhone 4 and have been holding off going to the Apple Store because of the lines, see if your local Apple Store has a waiting list for tomorrow. Some Apple Stores may be extending the pickup period by one day and will hold your iPhone 4 for pickup until end of business tomorrow, Friday June 25th. You’ll have to go to the Apple Store in person and find an employee with a waiting list. There were several of them combing the Fort Worth line. If your store has one and you’re reading this in line, they’ve probably already found you.

It’s no surprise that the iPhone 4 is flying out of stores. Fort Worth-area AT&T stores are already sold out. Many Fort worth-area Best Buy stores got few or zero new iPhones. If you reserved yours and are unable to pick it up today (or tomorrow), it looks like it’ll be a wait before more new iPhones become available.

199. I don’t know if that’s the entry price for an iPhone 4 or how hot it feels in the University Park Village parking lot today.

Today is iPhone 4 Day and there are reports from all over the country about long lines and even longer waits for Apple’s newest iPhones. The University Park Village Apple Store in Fort Worth, Texas is no different.
