For light and color moves, few apps came close to the precision of the classic Mill Colour. The app languished at 2 MP support for years without being updated to support the higher resolutions of even the venerable iPhone 3G.
The version 1.2 update has just been released. Mill Colour is back, still free, and is now updated to support the latest devices.
Luminance
Version 1.0
Price: $0.99 until August 23, 2011
Bottom Line: I really like it. It’s a good image editor with some great, advanced features, but it’s lacking some basic functionality to make it a great app.
Luminance by Subsplash is a new photo editor that gives you pro photo editing capabilities in a simple and elegant interface. Effortlessly add effects to your photos, choose from many built-in presets, and take edits from one photo and apply them to multiple photos.
Luminance is a serious image editor with few effects and frills beyond image editing.
Mill Colour by The Mill is a classic iPhone photo editing app. While it hasn’t been updated in over a year, this app is still useful, especially to owners of older iPhones. It’s very full-featured and powerful, especially for a free app. In addition to several preset photo effects, there are no other photo apps available that can adjust image qualities with the precision that Mill Colour can. Unfortunately, the app saves at a maximum 2 megapixel resolution — 1600×1200 pixels. The app has a glitch, so getting more than 1280×960 px output involves tricking the app a little bit.
UPDATE 03.10.11: We’ve updated this list for 2011. Be sure to check out our new post “The Ten Best FREE iPhone Photo Apps” featuring both free camera replacements and some great free iPhone photo apps. =M=
Recently, I wrote about The Best Free iPhoneography Apps: Camera Replacements. Now that you’ve shot your image, how are you going to process it? Here are nine great image editing apps and best of all, their price is free!
I realize that this list is not complete. There were several apps that I didn’t include for various reasons. In compiling this list, I found some apps that duplicated features of others. In those cases, I chose what I felt to be the app that did the job quickest, easiest and best. Also, there are great free apps being released all the time.
Some of these apps may be ad-supported, but none of them add a watermark to your images and all save at or really close to your iPhone’s full resolution, unlike many lite photo apps available. These are all full-featured apps and they produce good, if not outstanding effects. Again, for little more than bandwidth and real estate on your iPhone’s screen, there are some gems to be found in the photography section of the App Store. These apps should start you off with a well-rounded iPhoneography toolbox or enhance your existing iPhone “camera bag” — and all for free.

A found shot inside the Pike Place Market. The lines and the perspective create their own depth of field. The color and the neon were perfect. The crowd flows, but the image captures a spot of quiet in the midst of the noisy, bustling market.

I don’t know how old this sign is, although it’s very well maintained. I don’t recall if the store behind it was the hardware company. I suspect it wasn’t and the original tenant of this classic building near Pioneer Square is long gone. I liked the play between the bronze and the shadows. With the sun providing perfect contract for this shot, it was a nice visit to an older time.
