SOLSTICE: Rebirth of Summer- a hipstamatic exhibition

I always love brick and mortar exhibitions of iPhone prints. As the artform grows, expect to see more of these. Preaching to the choir here, but looking at the galleries on The iPhoneography Blog, Pixels At An Exhibition, and numerous other sites and photoblogs, there is some amazing photography that’s being created with iPhones.

If you are near New York City next week, CULTUREfix is hosting an exhibition of Hipstamatic prints. It’s a one-night event. If you’re in the city, be sure to check it out.

Cool Link: old new york in a modern world

To paraphrase the classic T-shirts that are still available in shops on 7th Avenue at 3 for $10, I love New York. New York is one of the easiest cities I’ve photographed. The people, the architecture, the vibe of the city make for great stories everywhere, and especially great for iPhoneographers.

iPhoneography: New York in LoFi: Part II

September 26-29, 2009

While I didn’t take a ton of photos — I think I took about 175 which included safety shots — I was very pleased with the shots I got and my ability to work with them on my iPhone. I’ve narrowed my story to the shots you see here and in the first part of this gallery.

For such a tall city, I found myself wanting to shoot with a wide aspect ratio much of the time, something which Camera HD helps me do easily in camera. For me, it either helped enhance the horizon or the added width helped to narrow the focus of your view of the scene.

Here is Part II of the story.

The beauty in the every day. Things we may walk past all the time and miss something wonderful.

I’ve become fascinated with neon light and how the iPhone camera interprets it, as well as how far you can push the image in post processing. I loved how the reds in the Roxy sign held their own in the never-ending day that is nighttime in Times Square. I loved how the buildings around the Stardust Diner sign picked up the ambient light, giving them a warmth which complimented the sign. Two neon signs — two very different settings. One always competing in the noise, the other a calm icon on a quiet late-night street.

The postcard. The leaves and the subtle hint of shadows take the image from pristine to real for me.

Sunset Over Manhattan

"Manhattan Monochrome"

New York La Guardia Airport
Shot with Zoom Lens, modifed with PhotoForge, monochromed in CameraBag

From New York La Guardia Airport, the skyline of Manhattan looks much much smaller than you see in the image — it’s a rough spot on the horizon. Even far away it was awe-inspiring with the sunset. While the colors were breathtaking, to me the image works better in black & white as it adds more contrast to the skyline than was there, even far away.

Old aircraft hangars modernized. A Boeing 757 sits in the foreground at the gate. Classic lines in a modern aircraft. The juxtaposition of old meeting new.

iPhoneography: New York in LoFi: Part I

September 26-29, 2009

I left the SLR at home. I loaded up the iPhone with a bunch of new apps. My goal was to see what I could photograph in New York City — what “found moments” I could capture — and then to edit them on the fly. I wanted to do it all on my iPhone.

New York is an amazing city. There are images to be captured everywhere. There were some where I was frustrated by my iPhone’s inability to capture the scene as I’d wanted it. The iPhone doesn’t do a good job of capturing some really big scenes (while it does a good job of capturing others — go figure). I was excited as everywhere I turned there seemed to be another image and I was glad to have my camera with me to catch them.

Some of my favorites are lucky mistakes — the right moment of the day for perfection of light and shadow, or something as simple as someone innocently walking through the frame which, to me, made a couple of these shots.

While I didn’t take a ton of photos — I think I took about 175 which included safety shots — I was very pleased with the shots I got and my ability to work with them on my iPhone. I’ve narrowed my story to the shots you see here.

Here is Part I of the story.

The original 16:9 aspect ratio of this shot is very nice as well, but I think aging it in Camera Bag adds to the timelessness of this industrial aspect of Yankee Stadium.

I sat directly across the platform from this man, both of us waiting for our trains. The platforms were nearly deserted and was unusually silent. He just sat there, unmoving. A minute later, we caught our train.

Where Camera Genius really excels is at night photography, where images are far more susceptible to shaking and blurring. I like shooting with Camera Genius whenever I have a few seconds to release the shutter — the time it takes for the anti-shake stabilization to kick in. I’ve found that it helps the clarity of all of my images often.
