Cool Link: iPhone photo apps that go beyond the lo-fi

How could I resist sharing a MacWorld post with a title like that?

In case you missed it a couple weeks ago, MacWorld’s Lauren Crabbe published a story online about using an iPhone for higher-quality image capture and editing – something that many of us already know about our cameras of choice, but might be of interest if you haven’t yet discovered some of the higher-end photo editors.

I agree with many of her choices, including using both PhotoForge2 and Filterstorm. Both apps have different uses in my toolbox. Her choice of ComicBook in an otherwise hi-fi-oriented article left me puzzled. Also, noting one of her oversights, Cogitap’s excellent Slow Shutter Cam (Slow Shutter Cam - Cogitap Software) does support full resolution on an iPhone 4.

“Yes, it is possible to take good photos on your iPhone without shoving it through a lo-fi app. And as cool as it may seem to make your party photos look like they were taken in 1976, one can’t help wonder what we will think of them in retrospect.”

Photo App Review: Filterstorm 3 – A Powerful Image Editor

Filterstorm
Version 3.0
Price $3.99

Rating 4 stars

Bottom Line: A strong four stars. It’s a powerful image editor designed to do serious work on your iDevice — adjustments that used to have to be done on a desktop.

New Filterstorm 3 iconAs more photographs are being shot on an iPhone and as more of those are completely processed on the device never even touching a desktop or laptop, the need grows for a powerful yet workable image editing solution for iPhone. Photogene and PhotoForge were two of the first to put a part of Photoshop’s tool set on the iPhone.

There have been several other dedicated image editors released for iPhone since then. Filterstorm first started as one of the first dedicated iPad image editors before being ported to iPhone. In earlier versions, I’d felt its interface was a little cramped for the small screen of the iPhone and better suited for the larger real estate of the iPad.

Filterstorm 3.0, the new update of this powerful image editor, changes that. With it’s newly revamped user interface and improvements to its tool set, Filterstorm 3 feels at home no matter which device it’s on. Calling it the new “Photoshop for the iPhone” does it a disservice. Filterstorm 3 sets the standard and redefines how image editing apps should work on the iOS platform.
