Follow up: Pic Grunger 3.2 released. Fixes low-res bug.

Pic Grunger 3.0 finally brought full-resolution support, even 5MP support for the iPhone 4. The 3.1 update inadvertently broke full-res support. Courtesy of the developer, Stephan Spring, Life In LoFi posted a workaround for the 3.1 version — a stopgap until an update was released that restored all full-res support.

As promised, the Pic Grunger 3.2 update is now available in the App Store and restores full resolution support to this excellent app. The update requires iOS 4 and is compatible with all iPhones and iPod Touch devices that are running iOS4.

So, the new fix to Pic Grunger 3.1′s low resolution issues are to update to the 3.2 version. You can update in iTunes or on your device. Start downloading….

Pic Grunger 3.1 update on the way. Here’s a fix until then.

Recently, the Pic Grunger 3.1 update was released and it contains a bug that saves all images at no more than 800×600 pixels. The developer, Stephen Spring, was quick to respond and an update that fixes the problem is coming soon — as early as next week.

If you weren’t able to downgrade back to version 3.0, here’s a temporary workaround to get high resolution working again until the new update is released. You can still save full-resolution 5MP images in the current version of Pic Grunger using this workaround sent to me by the developer.

To save high-res images, you have to select your photos from the the Effects screen (tap the camera icon on the top right — see the screenshot). This adds an extra step or two to processing the image, but worked on my iPhone 4. This won’t work on older iPod Touches, but it will work for iPhones.

Again, the update which fixes the issue should be available in the App Store late next week.

Bottom Line: Pic Grunger creates stunning lo-fi effects in high resolution. Highly recommended! An essential app if you like the look of grunge photography.

With the new, improved cameras in the iPhone 4 and 3GS, more and more the onus is now on developers to “dirty up” our images to give iPhonegraphy a digital lo-fi look. Pic Grunger by Stephen Spring has always been one of those apps and excelled at grunging up photos on the iPhone. The latest update brings new features and more importantly full-resolution output. Pic Grunger creates stunning lo-fi effects and now it supports the higher resolutions of the newer iPhones.
