Big Photo, an app that I recently reviewed, was recently updated. It’s an app that was well under the radar and you probably would have overlooked it. I was very pleasantly surprised by Big Photo, even though it had one or two issues.
I like developers that quickly address issues with their apps. With this update, one issue I had with the app has been updated and the result is much better than a mere fix. Find out why after the jump. >>>
Big Photo allows you to view pictures of any size with unlimited zoom in/out with highest quality. More importantly, it’s one of very few apps that let you upsample an image — resize it up. It seems to use a bilinear resampling method — a good, all-around way to add more pixels. It needs a lot of free RAM to work its magic, but you can often easily get enlargements on your iPhone or iPad up to 600%. Read my review of the previous version here. Big Photo should be able to handle images up to 64 megapixel images (if your device can handle it).
What’s new in the update? The zoom issue that I had with the app has been fixed and fixed very nicely. The update not only fixes the slowness I experienced with the zoom tool, it replaces continuous zooming with super-fast staged zooming. The new zoom is extremely fast and will lets you view your original image up to 100% — actually, much greater than 100% — a much closer view than viewing in your photo library. It’s a very cool feature for close, detailed examination of your photos. See the sample above. I could actually zoom in to see each individual pixel and more.
I’ve got some promo codes to give away down below. If you would rather purchase the app, Big Photo is only $0.99. For viewing photos up close or resampling images, I definitely recommend this app. Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
